Charles Edmund Dumaresq Clavell, later known as James Dumaresq Clavell, was born in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia on 10 October 1921. As a soldier in the British Army, he was held as a prisoner of war by Japanese forces in Malaya from 1942 to 1945. After retiring from the Army in 1948, he worked as a screenwriter and then as a director before writing novels, more notably his 1975 novel Shōgun, which has been adapted into a television miniseries in 1980 and again as a limited television series in 2024. He died in Vevey, Vaud, Switzerland on 7 September 1994.
