Biography

Biography

Copied from an old book written by Elder J. J. Watts, a family friend and pastor on Tuesday, May 2, 1899.

Jackson Gideon Chambers was born at Bellefonte, Jackson County, Alabama on Wednesday, March 19, 1834. He migrated to Raleigh, North Carolina as a young lad. Was married to Annah Elizabeth Ferrell of that city, who was born there Tuesday, April 26, 1836. They went by wagon train to Missouri where they settled in southern Phelps County. They had ten children, five sons and five daughters.

Jackson Gideon Chambers was the first postmaster at Blooming Rose, Missouri, so named by his wife Annah Elizabeth. He was a charter member of the second Masonic Lodge west of the Mississippi River which met every two weeks on Saturday nights - weather permitting in winter months. He rode a chestnut sorrell stallion and wore a red flannel cape to attract wild deer to which he would bring home and also wild turkeys for the family meat. He would leave home on Saturday mornings - returning Sunday evenings. The lodge was located in Houston, Texas County, Missouri, which was twenty-six miles from their home.

Annah Elizabeth Chambers owned the first sewing machine in Texas and Phelps County, Missouri. Jackson Gideon Chambers served in the Confederate Army and died at home of tuberculosis Tuesday, June 16, 1868, from exposure and ill treatment while he and his unit were imprisoned by the Union Army in Tennessee, aged 34 1/2 years. His widow bore a daughter, Elizabeth Delilah, two months after his death, and she died at birth. Annah Elizabeth Ferrell Chambers died Saturday, October 6, 1877, age 41 years.

They lie buried in unmarked graves in a cemetery near Sherrill, Missouri, near the farm they owned.
