Biography

Mr. John W Brent, Confederate veteran and well known farmer, aged seventy-five years, died suddenly of heart trouble March 6, at Bogue Chitto, where he had made his home for many years. Mr. Brent was loved and respected by an extraordinarily large circle of friends and acquaintances and his name stood for integrity. So well preserved and so vigorous was Mr Brent that many were surprised to learn of his advanced age at the time of his death. The deceased was a devout member of the Baptist Church for the greater part of his life, and a strong supporter of the higher ideals of his community. His children were devoted to their parents and home, and deep sympathy is felt for the family circle so sadly broken by the loss of the father and husband. At the funeral services Revs. R.D. Stringer and I.H. Anding officiated, and the following well-known veterans of Bogue Chitto, Brookhaven and vicinity acted as honorary pall-bearers; A.M. Summers, J.A. Penn, J.A. McCormick, N.E. Spencer, H.R. Boynton, Wm. Price, W.C. Price, H.T. Reed, T.J. Gill and I.H. Anding. Mr. Brent is survived by his wife, formerly Miss Jane Price, and several children; Misses Ella Brent of Hattiesburg and Clara Brent, Bogue Chitto; Mmes. Barney Herman and J. Cox, New Orleans; R.L. Brent, Picayune; W.N. Brent, Baton Rouge and Dr. W.H. Brent of Hammond.
