Biography

This profile is part of the Boy Name Study.

Adam was born about 1770, most likely in Loudon County, Virginia. He was the son of Jacob Boy. The identity of his mother has not been proven.

He married Sarah Royston sometime around 1800.

Adam was in a tax record in 1812 in Sullivan, Tennessee. He is taxed on 47 acres, 1 white poll, and 1 black poll. [1]

In 1827, Adam was granted five acres of land on an Island most likely in the South Holston River in Sullivan County.[2]

In 1837 on the Early Tax List he is listed as owning 177 Acres of land with 3 slaves age 12-50, his brother Andrew is listed as owning 206 Acres, and the brothers Jacob & George are listed as owning 311 Acres. [3]

He passed away before 6 October 1863, the date his will was proven.

His will (signed 3 October 1857 and proven 6 Oct 1863) mentions the following slaves:

  • Rhoda Emeline (child) bequeathed to daughter Catherine at death of his wife
  • Eliza and her offspring bequeathed to daughter Elizabeth
  • Jesse (mulatto boy) to be freed after death of his wife and shall have one fourth part of his labor for his support during my wife's life time and at her death all of his labor to be for his own use and benefit and shall have one acre of land where his house now stands running to the Bank of the river
  • Thomas (black man) to be freed after death of his wife and shall have one acre of land above Jesse's running to the Bank of the river also one horse, the horse he has now.

The 1812 Tax Record for Sullivan County, Tennessee lists him as being taxed for 1 black poll.
