Biography

This profile is part of the Boy Name Study.

Annie was born about 1869 in Wisconsin to Charles and Mary (Miller) Boy. Her sister, Bertha was born in December 1975 also in Wisconsin. The family moved to Mason City, Cerro Gordo County, Iowa where her sister, Linda, was born on 5 April 1878.

In April 1879, the family settled in Lime Creek Township, Cerro Gordo County, Iowa.[1]

In 1880 Annie (age 11) was living in Lime Creek Township, Cerro Gordo County, Iowa.[2] The household included Charles Boy, age 43 born in Prussia, Mary Boy, age 39 born in Austria, Bertha Boy, age 4, Linda Boy, age 2, and Fred Lobs, age 33 born in Prussia. Charles was a farmer, suffering from Dispepsia at the time of the census. Fred Lobs is listed as a Servant working in farming.

In 1885 the household in Lime Creek, Cerro Gordo County, Iowa included Annie (age 16), her parents, Charles (age 48) and Mary (age 45), her sisters, Bertha (age 8) and Linda (age 6). The Iowa Census indicates the family was living in either the NE NW or NW NW portion of Township 97, Range 20, Section 36. (The enumerator wrote over the first call for the subdivision cannot tell if it was NE over NW or NW over NE). Her father, Charles, was listed as being eligible to vote which indicates he had become a naturalized citizen by this time.[3]

In the 1895 census Anna (age 25, born in Wisconsin) was still living at home with her parents and younger sisters in Cerro Gordo County, Iowa. Charles (age 58, born in Germany) is listed as a Farmer and of the Lutheran faith. He is also eligible to vote. Mary (age 53, born in Austria) is listed as Keeping House and as a Catholic. Anna is listed as a Teacher. Bertha (age 18) and Linda (age 16), both reported to have been born in Cerro Gordo County, have no occupation listed. Bertha as previously noted was actually born in Wisconsin. None of the daughters have a designation for the religious affiliation.[4]

Anna (age 27), daughter of Chas Boy and Mary Miller, married Max J Tietjens (age 26) on 6 August 1896 in Cerro Gordo County, Iowa.[5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12] They had at least three children:

  1. Melvin W Tietjens (1897-1976)[13]
  2. Cleo A Tietjens (1901-1991)[14]
  3. Child born after 1900 and died before 1910.[15]

In 1900 Anna, (age 29), was living with her husband Max J Tietjens (age 28) and their first child, Melvin born in May 1897, in Lime Creek Township, Cerro Gordo County, Iowa. Max and Anna are reported to have been married for three years with Anna listed as the mother of 1 child. They are living in a rented house but neither have a reported occupation.[16] NOTE: 1900 Census has her birth month and year as September 1871. Per the earliest census (1880) she was age 11 which indicates she was born in 1869.

Sometime after her daughter, Cleo, was born in April of 1901 Anna and family moved to Colorado.

In 1910 Anna (age 40) was living in Broadway, Arapahoe County, Colorado. The household included her widowed mother, Mary Boy (age 69), husband Max (age 39) and children, Melvin (age 12) and Cleo (age 9). Max was a farmer. Anna is reported to be the mother of three (3) children with two (2) living. Her mother, Mary, is reported to be the mother of eight (8) children with three (3) living.[15]

Anna died in 1916 probably in Colorado and was buried in Elmwood Saint Joseph Cemetery in Mason City, Cerro Gordo County, Iowa.[17]
