John was born in 1752 in Ireland.[1] He immigrated from Cork, Ireland to Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1766, on the Willmott under the name John Bowler.[2]
He married Chloe Jordan in 1784[3] in Pembroke, Massachusetts, but soon moved to Frankfort, Maine where they raised their family. They lived in the section of Frankfort that is now the town of Winterport. From Littlefield's An Old River Town,[4] the map from 1808 shows the "Bowlings" owned lot 287.
