Nicholas Bernoulli "the elder" was the son of Nicolaus and Margaretha Bernoulli.[1]
Born in 1662 and died in 1716, he was a portrait painter.[1] He painted, in 1687, the picture of Jacob, resting his right hand on a globe. He also served on the Basel city council.[2]
A son: Nicolaus Bernoulli (1687-1759), nephew of Jacob and Johann Bernoulli. He was Jacob's student, studied also law, and contributed to the study of mathematical probability with his law thesis.[1]
