Biography

Warren was born in 1842. He passed away in 1911.

Warren Edgar Bent was born about 1842 in Paradise, Wilmot Township, Annapolis County, Nova Scotia Colony, British North America. He was the son of Warren Bent and Frances Shafner. Variations on his given name include: Warren Edgar, Edgar. Of these he seems to have been best known by Edgar. *Note: Allen Bent's Bent Family in America cites the date of birth as 1841.

Edgar married Lydia Lavinia Balcom, daughter of Samuel Balcom and Lucy A. Parker, on 24 Nov 1870 in Paradise, Wilmot Township, Annapolis County, Nova Scotia, Canada. Vows were solemnized by licence in a Baptist ceremony performed by Rev. N. Vidito in the presence of witnesses C. W. Shafner and [illegible] Balcom. At the time, Warren was a 28-year-old bachelor making his living as a farmer on his farm in Paradise. Lydia was about the same age, single and also a Paradise resident.

Place Note: With the enactment of The County Incorporations Act, 17 April 1879, the township form of governance in Nova Scotia was replaced by a two-tier system: provincial and municipal. Each county became incorporated as the Municipality of ________ (county name). As this applied to Annapolis County, it was incorporated as the Municipality of the County of Annapolis. When a city or town incorporated, the town's governance superseded the county governance and would be designated the Town of ______, such as the Town of Annapolis Royal.

Edgar became a widower on 6 Oct 1906 with the death of Lydia, to whom he had been married for almost 36 years.

Edgar died on 5 Nov 1911 in Paradise, Municipality of the County of Annapolis, Annapolis County, Nova Scotia, Canada of apoplexy and interment took place on 8 Nov 1911 in Paradise Cemetery, Paradise.

OBITUARIES

The Halifax Herald, November 7, 1911, Page 2 OBITUARY #1 - Warren Edgar Bent Warren E. Bent Dies Suddenly In His Home Bridgetown, November 6 – Suddenly and without a moment's warning, Warren Edgar Bent, of Paradise, dropped to the floor of his home at 2.30 yesterday morning. Dr. M.E. Armstrong was soon called in. It was at once ascertained that life was extinct. Mr. Bent, not feeling very well just after midnight, called his son Ralph, with whom he was living – complaining of a pain in his stomach. This was soon relieved by a hot drink or two. Shortly after his son had again retired a heavy fall was heard. In a moment he was at his father's side, who had fallen from a chair to the floor, and died after making only three gasps for breath. Every valley farmer knew Edgar Bent, who was sixty-five years of age. Mr. Bent retired from active farm life some two years ago. Mrs. Bent had predeceased him three years. Three sons and two daughters survive – Ralph, on the old homestead; Harry, at Paradise West; Charles, in Summerville, Mass.; Mrs. James Brooks, Freeport, and Mrs. (Capt.) Wm. R. Longmire, of this town. Burial at Paradise cemetery.

The Weekly Monitor and Western Annapolis Sentinel, Bridgetown, Nova Scotia - November 8, 1911 - Page 4 OBITUARY #2 - Edgar Bent EDGAR BENT The very sudden death of Mr. Edgar Bent, a well-known and prosperous farmer of Paradise took place early Sunday morning, at the home of his son, Mr. Ralph Bent, of heart failure. Mr. Bent, though in his seventieth year, was still very vigorous and hale in appearance, and was apparently in his usual health when he retired on Saturday night. At an early hour of the morning Mr. Ralph Bent was aroused by his father, who complained of being distressed. The son went down to the kitchen with his father and built up a fire for the purpose of getting him a hot drink. After the fire was built, his father said he felt more comfortable and persuaded Ralph to go back to bed. The latter had left his father but a short time when he heard a fall and hastening down stairs found his father lying lifeless upon the kitchen floor. Mr. Bent has been a life-long resident of Paradise having inherited a part of the old family homestead place, his brother, Fletcher, occupying the other half. The death of his wife occurred about five years ago and a year later he sold his place and during the interval since had spent his time among his children. He had three sons and two daughters living, the sons being Ralph, of Paradise, Harry O., of West Paradise, and Charles, of Lynn; two daughters, Mrs. W. R. Longmire, of Bridgetown and Mrs. James Brooks, of Westport. He is survived also by two brothers, Rev. Gilbert Bent, of Salem, Mass., and Fletcher, of Paradise; and two sisters, Mrs. (Capt.) Jacob Bent of Granville Ferry and Mrs. I. L. Miller, of Lynn. Mr. Bent was one of the progressive and successful farmers of Annapolis County and his general manner and general worthiness of life and character won for him universal esteem and regard. The sympathy of the community is extended to the family so suddenly bereaved, in which the Monitor unites. The funeral takes place from his son's home this afternoon with burial in the family lot at Paradise.
