Biography

Sydney Bent was born in Leicestershire, England.

Sydney was born on the 11th February 1884 in Leicester to John Bent and Elizabeth Woolman. ^[1]

In the 1901 census Sydney (age 17), an Oil Merchants Clerk, was listed as a single son in Leicester, Leicestershire, England.^[2]

On the 3rd September 1919 Sydney was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal 'for consistent good work and conspicuous devotion to duty. His initiative and cool courage under fire have on many occasions been a fine example to those around him. Especially this was so on the 24th April, 1918, near Villers-Bretonneux, when his No. 1 was wounded and he himself gassed. Although suffering considerably, he kept his gun firing for several hours. His conduct has under all conditions been of the utmost value in keeping up the spirits of his comrades.' ^[3]

He passed away in 1944. ^[4]
