Biography

Richard was born about 1748, according to his gravestone^[1]. He was probably the son of Daniel Bear who was baptised at Broad Clyst 22 May 1748.^[2]

He died on 23 January 1800, aged 52^[1], and was buried at Kenton 1 February 1800^[3]

Research Notes

The link to Broad Clyst is supported by a deed of 1702 where the parties include the residuary legatees under the will of Richard Bear:

"Mary Bear of Kenton, widow and relict of Richard Bear, yeoman, John Bear, late of Lambeth, innholder but now of Kenton, gentleman, and Joseph Smith of Broadclyst, yeoman"^[4]

John Bear's will shows that he was Richard's brother. As well as a son Richard, Daniel Bear of Broad Clyst had a son John and a daughter Ann who married a Joseph Smith.
