Jane was born around 1805. She was the daughter of Richard Bartlett and Mary Holly. She grew up in the city of Saint John where her father was working in the logging industry. She was listed as a Loyalist in the 1851 census which was most likely due to her mother Mary Holly who came to New Brunswick in 1783. There is no evidence that her father Richard Bartlett was a Loyalist. He lived in Nova Scotia before moving to New Brunswick in 1779.
Jane married James Emery who came to New Brunswick in 1816 and also worked in the logging industry. From the New Brunswick Courier, March 11, 1826, Saint John: (*) "Musquash (St. John), 2nd inst., by Thomas Menzies, Esq., James Emery/ Jane Bartlett fifth d/o Richard Bartlett, all Lancaster Parish." The couple had nine children and moved to Kingston, Kings County.
James died in 1863 and Jane passed away in 1872. From The Daily Telegraph, Saint John, Aug. 29 1872: (**) "d. 28th inst., Jane Emery relict of James Emery age 69. Funeral Friday 11 o'clock from her son's residence Golding St. (St. John)." Jane was buried in Trinity Anglican Cemetery in Kingston, Kings County. Inscription on grave: "In Loving Memory of James Emery 1795-1864 His Wife Jane Bartlett Emery 1805-1872."
