Thaddeus Bailey was born in Newbury, MA in 1859, the son of Nathan Bailey and Sarah Pillsbury.[1]
Thaddeus Bailey was only eighteen when he gave service in the Revolutionary War at Pownalborough. He served as a private in the Massachusetts militia in Capt. Daniel Scott's company, Col. Joseph North's regiment. This unit served for three days, from 10 September 1777, in the defense and retaking of a mastship in the Sheepscot River. Thaddeus was also on a list of men mustered in Lincoln County to march to Providence to reinforce Col. Wade's and Col. Jacobs's regiments in 1778. He enlisted as a private 30 June 1779 and served until his discharge on 25 September 1779, during which time he was in Capt. Timothy Heald's company of Col. Samuel McCobb's regiment, and gave 2 months 27 days service in the Penobscot expedition. He received a pension in his later years for his Revolutionary War service. His pension, which began on 3 May 1831, entitled him to the sum of $30.65 a year. Thaddeus also served in the War of 1812 from 3 September 1814, when he marched to Belfast, until 14 September 1814, when he returned home without engaging the enemy. He is listed in the 1841 Roll of Pensioners as 80 years old, living in Palermo.
In 1783, Thaddeus married Mary Knowlton.[2] Thaddeus and Mary lived in the north precinct of Pownalborough, now Alna, Maine, during the early years of their marriage, and the births of their first three children were recorded there. Thaddeus was recorded in Pownalborough on the 1790 census.
In 1795 Thaddeus bought land in Sheepscot Great Pond in Lincoln County, which is now Palermo, Maine, in Waldo County. The land, bought for $110, was a one hundred acre tract designated as Lot #79 on Plan #9. Sheepscot Great Pond Plantation, attracted several settlers from the Pownalborough area in the late 1700s. They were early members of the Baptist Church of Palermo, founded in 1804.
By 1810 they were living in Fairfax, which is now Albion, where Thaddeus was recorded on the 1810 and 1820 census. On the 1830 and 1840 censuses, he was recorded in Albion, ME.
Thaddeus and Mary ("Polly") KNOWLTON Bailey were the parents of eleven children.
Thaddeus died in 1849, at the age of 89.[3] His wife had pre-deceased him more than 30 years previously.
