Gustav Johnson was born on 18 Oct 1855 in Nes, Akershus, Norway, the son of Andreas Eriksen Sand and Anna Gurine Gulbrandsdtr Huusmoe and was baptized on 16 Nov. [1]
On 18 Oct 1881 he married Henrietta Olivia Sander in Glenwood, Winneshiek, Iowa. [2] Together they had nine children: [3]
Gustav passed away on 6 Apr 1934 in Decorah, Winneshiek, Iowa, and is buried in Glenwood Lutheran Cemetery. [4]
According to his biography in Edwin C. Bailey's Past and Present of Winneshiek County Iowa, Gustav was "a son of Andrew and Anna Johnson, who in the year 1864 crossed the Atlantic and became residents of Madison, Wisconsin, where their remaining days were passed." [5]
This is incorrect as can be seen from his birth record and certificate. It also doesn't help that his adopted father's name was also Andreas (anglicized to Andrew). Gustav ended up using his adopted father's patronymic name Johansen (Johnson), instead of his farm name Løvlien.
