John Anderson [1][2] was born about 1707 in Ireland. [3]
He arrived in about 1722 in Pennsylvania. [4] Arived in Augusta County, Virginia, in about 1738.[5]
On the 22 May 1740, in the Court of Orange County, Colony of Virginia John Anderson proved his importation to be eligible for lands / land grants. "John Anderson came from Ireland to the Port of Philadelphia with wife Jean (Jane), and his children Esther, Mary, and Margaret." [6]
John Anderson was granted 400 acres on a branch of North River of Shanando, called Anderson's Branch on 10 Jun 1740. This was acknowledged on 17 Sep 1747 for .50 current money Virginia as recorded in the Court Records of Augusta, Virginia Colony.[7]
On 1 Dec 1740, John Anderson was Patented 270 acres of land in Augusta, Virginia. On 19 August 1747, Jane his wife released her dower rights and this was acknowledged by John. [8]
He was one of the first elders of the Stone Church [5]
He had nine known children with his wife Jean . Five sons, all of which served in the Revolutionary War and four daughters. His daughters Margaret and Jean married brothers, Margaret becoming the wife of Capt. James Allen, and Jean the wife of Lieut. Hugh Allen. Lieut. Hugh Allen fell as a soldier in the great battle of Point Pleasant in 1774." [5]

He died about 1786 in Augusta County, Virginia, USA. [9][10][11] There is a memorial site set at FAG for him showing he was buried at Fort Defiance, Augusta County, Virginia, USA. [12][13]
The Will of John Anderson was probated in Augusta, Virginia and dated 4 March 1779 reads as follows:
To wife, Jane, the mare called the Carolina mare; to son, Robert; to son, William, in case he return from his journey; to son,James; to son, Andrew, tract adjoining John Patterson; to son William's son, John, infant; to son-in-law, James Allen; to son-in-law, Wm. Craig. Executors, sons James and Andrew. Teste: James Anderson, James Blair, George Anderson. Codicil, 17th May 1786, transfers slave from son James to son Andrew. Teste: James and George Anderson. Proved, 20th February 1787, by James and George Anderson. Andrew qualifies. [14]
Military Service
In 1742 he was a member of Augusta County Militia. [5]
He is listed for his Patriotic Service in Virginia Colony, during the Revolutionary War [15] via the DAR with an Ancestor # A002454. His service was helping to raise money and ammunition in Augusta Colony in 1775.
