Charles Anderson was born in Louisville, Kentucky. He studied law at Miami University and was admitted to the Ohio bar. In 1844 he was elected to the Ohio Senate and served for two years. Due to health concerns he relocated to San Antonio, Texas. Strongly pro-union he made an impassioned speech in 1860 and was arrested without charge by pro-secession citizens. He was able to escape back to Ohio with his family. At the outbreak of the Civil War President Lincoln sent him on a pro-union speaking tour of Europe to garner support. After his return he accepted command of the 93rd Ohio infantry and was commissioned as a colonel. Badly wounded at the Battle of Stones River (December 31, 1962 - January 2, 1863) he resigned his commission and returned to Ohio,
He was elected Lt Governor, taking office in 1864 and assumed the governorship on August 29, 1865 upon the death of Gov. John Brough, serving an uneventful five months.
He died in 1895.[1]
