AW e-mail Jan.7, 1997: "Jacob I was still somewhere in SC in 1790. He appeared in Wilkes county GA in 1794, when he purchased land. His deed says that he is from Fairfield Co., SC He said that he was a Revolutionary War soldier. He did receive land in the lotteries. He died About 1827. According to the land lottery records, Jacob Sr. is listed as a Revolutionary War soldier. However, I cannot find the military service record. This bugs me. Perhaps I need to look in NC There are a bunch of Ammons from NC" (signed) AW

Note that my very own Jacob Ammons and also William Wiregrass and John Wiregrass were all born in Fairfield Co., SC

In the Genealogy Bulletin of Dollarhide Systems, Number 18 Apr-May-Jun 1993, "Genealogical Event Queries" page 14, the submitter of an Ammons item is AW Chesterfield: AW reports that Jacob I was a Revolutionary War soldier. The name of Jacob Ammons is on a deed in 1794 in Georgia, and it states that he is from Fairfield Co., SC AW has a copy of this deed.

This is e-mail 07-20-1997 from Suzanne Walton Ammons SWAmmons

From "Lincoln Co., Genealogy and History" compiled by Robert S. Davis Jr. and James E. Dorsey:

Jacob Ammons is deeded land by John Guice (Grice) and Elisabeth his wife on 25 December 1797. Deed is for 109 acreson Soap Creek that was granted to John Guice (Grice) on 19 October 1797. Witnesses: John Hannon before Phillip Zimmerman, JP Elisabeth Guice signs by mark.

Registered: 27 August 1798 page 168 Lincoln Co., Deed Book A 1796-1799.

Jacob Ammons is listed as juror for the court of Lincoln Co., GA, July Term 1801, March term 1803, and February Term 1804.

Jacob Ammons Jr. is listed in Wilkes Co., GA marriages to Malinda Carlisle March 27, 1817.

Jacob Ammons is listed in "Early Records of Georgia, Volumes I and II Wilkes County" many times as testator. There is also a Jacob Hammons listed more times.

LGS found in "Lincoln Co., Genealogy and History" by Davis & Dorsey that Charles Hambrick and Jacob Ammons were on jury duty at the same time in Lincoln county in 1802. The jury pool included John Hambrick, James Hambrick and a William "Hammock."

Jonathan Ammons is on the Muster List from Lincoln Co., GA 1814, and is listed in Marriages to a Miss Amy Moncrief Feb. 4, 1822.

Jacob Ammons Jr is "William J. Ammons" with wife Vilinia in 1850 Lincoln census, age 60 (1790), with son James O. Ammons, age 30, laborer.

Then in February 1803 Charles Hambrick was again a juror, and Wm. McKenny was named overseer of a road with 34 hands, among whom were Jacob Ammons, William Moncrief, August Moncrief, Charles Hammock, John Hammock, and James Hambrick.

AW sends a query in March 1995 to soc.genealogy.surnames: "Jacob William Ammons arrived in Wilkes county GA (which later became Lincoln county) in 1794 from Fairfield county SC His later records are in Lincoln county GA His will is dated 1827."

But AW later reports that Jacob I's will was dated 1827 and was probated in 1831. We all previously thought that his deathdate was December 22, 1831. Jacob Ammons is listed in "Georgia Wills, Vol. II, Lincoln Co., 1808-1832," in Will Book "B" Sept. 3, 1827 and Nov. 21, 1831. In this brief abstract, Jacob II is named, with his children Matilda, James, and Elizabeth, and Jonathan is named, with "the children by his first wife," Louise, Henry, and William.

Lincoln Co., Will Book B 1807-1832 page 255 Jacob Ammons, 21 November 1831 to son Jonathan and his three children: Louise, Henry, and William. To son Jacob's children: Matilda, James, and Elizabeth. Executors: John Frazer and William Glaze.

Estate Records 1796-1899 list Ammons, Jacob, Sr. deceased. William Glaze executor 1827, John Frazer executor 1831, Jacob Ammons administrator 1834, Charles Crook administrator de bonis non administratus 1857, Sept. 3, 1827 - Jan. 20, 1859. Also listedis James O. Ammons, deceased; and Charles Crook, executor July 20, 1852-August 4, 1856.

John9 says June1, 1995 by phone that Jacob Jr. is "Under 16" in 1790 census, and therefore born 1774 or later.

John9 believes 1995 that John2 1740, Jacob, and William were brothers. John9 believes in e-mail Jan.1997 that Thomas 1748 and Joshua 1756 WarHero were also their brothers.

And that Jacob 1762, Thomas 1763, John3 1765, Michael 1770, Eleazar 1773, William and Elizabeth were siblings.

In his letter to Nina, Wallace Willis, Box 38, Bronwood GA 31726 says that he "suspects that Joshua Ammons who married Frances Parker 'might' be the father of Jacob Sr., but this is still to be proved." But Archie says that Joshua=1756 and Jacob Sr=1762, so the connection would more likely be brothers, if related at all.

E-mail from AW February 13, 1997: "HeyArchie, Jacob Jr. was born around 1790 according to the census I had found. He was married 27 Mar 1817 in Wilkes Co GA Jonathan and Jacob were born within the same ten-year (census speaking) time period.

Also, according to census records, Jacob Sr.: 1820 - 45+ 1830 - 60-70

"Jacob Jr.: 1820 - 16-26 1830 - 30-40 1840 - 50-60 1850 - 60

Interestingly, Jacob Jr. on the 1850 census is listed as William J. Ammons. I have often wondered if Jacob Sr. was a William as well.
I did not read the 1830 census for Jonathan. I need toreorder it and check it out. They are listed as Hammonds." (signed) AW
AW believes that he had only the two sons. One or the other Jacob Ammons was a tinker.
Jacob Ammons I bought land of Jno. Guice (Grice) in Lincoln county on December 25, 1797.

In "An 1800 Census for Lincoln Co., Georgia," compiled by Frank Parker Hudson, published by R. J. Taylor Foundation, Atlanta 1977, Jacob Ammons is shown on the 1801 Tax Roll with 200 acres.

Sterling Ammons of 109 W. 15th St, Front Royal VA 22630 writes me on May 20, 1995 that a Jacob he is looking for was born in 1765. Earlier I had a guess of 1762-1770 for Jacob's birthdate.
Sterling writes that Eleazar is Sterling's ancestor. "Eleazar was born 1773 in SC He was in the Jackson Co. GA land lottery in 1805. He moved from GA to KY and then to TN He had a brother Thomas who was born in 1763 and who fought in the American Revolution. Thomas was a prisoner at the fall of Charleston, SC Thomas died in 1808 in GA His widow, Catherine Friday Ammons moved to Hickman Co. TN and then to Clinton ILL. She sold some land in 1834 that she had purchased in TN in 1810. In 1843 she applied for a widow's pension. It was denied. In the paperwork that I have read, a Government agent indicated that they were searching for Thomas' two younger brothers, who were supposed to be living in the upper part of MS or TN Eleazar is one and I am beginning to think that Jacob might be the other brother." (ABA says that they would be Eleazar and Michael.)
From phone call to Sterling L. Ammons May 27, 1995: John3 horsethief Ammons was born in either Haw River NC or Fairfield Co. SC He and his brother William then go to Lincoln Co. GA, following their brother Jacob born 1765. (ABA: Apparently Sterling shows two different brothers, William and Jacob, so maybe William is not the middle name of Jacob.)
Sterling Ammons says that Jacob was involved in a land sale in GA in 1805.Jonathan Ammons is on the Muster List from Lincoln Co., GA 1814, and is listed in Marriages to a Miss Amy Moncrief Feb. 4, 1822.
Jacob Ammons Jr is "William J. Ammons" with wife Vilinia in 1850 Lincoln census, age 60 (1790), with son James O. Ammons, age 30, laborer.

Inthe book "History of Lincoln Co., Georgia," by Clinton J. Perryman, in the section "Head-Right Land Warrants Issued by the Land Courts of Lincoln County" on page 151, it is reported that Jacob Ammons was granted 500 acres in 1818. He apparently gained land warrants in 1817 also. These records apparently show him to be a Revolutionary War soldier.

A Jacob Ammons was witness on the will of Joseph Garbell? Garbrell? Sr. probated March 3, 1817 in Wilkes Co., from a hand-written note of Nina K. Young.
There is a Jacob Ammons, born SC, in the 1840 Lincoln Co., GA Census. This has to be Jacob II.

This is the will of which AW has a copy: Lincoln Co., GA, ORDINARY ESTATE RECORDS, Book D, p.255-256, 3 Sept. 1827: "I, Jacob Ammons, being very sick & weak in body, but of sound mind & memory. After my just debts are paid I will that all my affects both real & personal to be sold and the money divided between my six Grandchildren, to my son Jonathan three chn. by his first wife namely Louisa, Henry & William. My son Jacob's three chn. namely Matilda, James, and Elizabeth. Also my executors to take possession of my ready money, notes & accounts & dispose in the same manner as above. I appoint my trusty friends John Frazer & William Glaze as my executors. Wit: David Florence, Thomas Glaze, Thomas X Dallas. Signed Jacob X Ammons. Proved on oath of David Florence & Thomas X Dallas this 21 Nov. 1831. Recorded this 25 Nov. 1831. Sgn. (signed) Frances F. Fleming, C.C.O. "

Later, Henry Ammons is very upset. He did not get enough slaves from his grandfather's estate. He filed a suit in Choctaw Co., MS against his father Jonathan, and later against the estate ofhis father represented by the administrators James Poe and Hamilton R. Ammons because the original executor John Frazier died before the settlement was completed. Jacob II was appointed in Lincoln Co., as "Executor De Bonis Non Administratis" or Executor of the Goods Not Yet Administered. "History of Lincoln Co., GA" by Perryman 1933.

"Leonard Higdon of Anson Co., North Carolina and His Descendants." by Jo Ann Smith is a book shown in the CD-ROM library of the LDS family history center. "Leonard Higdon lived in old Anson Co., before 1754 and died there before 1775. Descendants lived in North Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Oklahoma, and elsewhere. Book includes Ammons, Bryson, Gribble, Holbrook, Jones, Walker, and related families."

John9 Niceville posts a Bulletin Board query on the Internet Nov. 17, 1995: The Ammons family was found in Edgecombe and Halifax Counties NC in the 1750s. John Ammons was listed as a survey crew member on an Edgecombe Co., deed on April 10, 1752, and again as a court witness in Edgecombe Co., on August 17, 1754. Later, a Thomas Ammons appears as a member of a survey crew in Edgecombe Co., on September 28, 1757, and again on April 29, 1761 in Halifax County. Some suggest that Johnand Thomas are the same person, but I have no documentation to support such a claim. It appears that the family could have come from Virginia. Rumor has it that a set of Ammons brothers arrived into Norfolk VA around 1750 from Wales. I have yet to see any documentation supporting this. During the latter portion of the Rev. War the family moved to the Lexington/Fairfield/Newberry Co., area of SC

I'd like to hear from anyone who might be able to shed some light on this sutuation. Did the Ammons come from VA, or did they settle directly into NC from another country? Where did the Ammons come from? Has there been a name change or variation from an older root, such as Hammon d s, Ammon d s, Amman d s, MacCammon d, or any other variant? Any information or suggestions will be of great help, and any information that I have will be gladly shared.

Jacob Ammons purchased land in Wilkes Co., GA, in 1794. The deed stated that he was from Fairfield Co., SC The part of Wilkes where Jacob lived became Lincoln Co. Jacob Sr. received land in the land lottery and was listed as a revolutionary solder. Jacob Sr. had two sons, Jonathan and Jacob William.

DO THE FOLLOWING NOTES establish that Jacob Ammons 1768-1827 was a son of John2 Ammons 1735-1795 and Elizabeth ? ? I do think so. The connection at Fairfield county SC is important. Curtis Graham of Houston TX posted a query to RootsWeb Query Board for Fairfield Co., SC in Nov. 1998. Angie found it 07-31-1999. Curtis said that John2Ammons and Elizabeth had sons John3, Jacob, Thomas, Eleazor. Curtis got this from John9. He said in his query "John and Elizabeth located in Fairfield county SC circa 1778 with at least four sons, as named. Thomas was a soldier in the Revolutionary War. This family had moved from the Haw River (Haw Branch) area of NC Thomas is my direct lineage. He was living in Georgia when he died circa 1806. Want to share information." Curtis Graham Angie and me 08-01-1999: "I got my information from John Ammons of Niceville.

JOHN9 HAS DOCUMENTATION OF A WILL OF JOHN AND ELIZABETH Ammons IN WHICH THE LAND WAS WILLED TO JACOB Ammons WHEN THE WILL WAS EXECUTED circa 1797. I do know that the other three brothers, Thomas, John3, and Eleazer left Fairfield Co., SC soon after the will was read circa 1797. Thomas and Eleazer went to Alabama, where Thomas died circa 1808. Eleazer then went to Tennessee with Thomas's widow. John3 went to Barren Co., KY,then to Pike Co., MS. Eleazer followed John3 to KY, then followed him to MS. John3 died and is buried in MS. Eleazer moved to Fayette Co., TN, where he remained and died."

A note by Archie: "The secrets of Jacob surely lie in the county library or courthouse of Fairfield Co., SC" Ernest Ernie Ammons emailed Angie April 25, 2002 : Thanks for responding to my request. I have family history to trace my lineage to Michael Ammons and hiswife Martha, who records show to be Michael Ammons and Martha Young married 6 November 1806 in Barren Co., Kentucky with Eleazer Ammons as SUR(bondsman or witness). Eleazer (b1773) was brother to Thomas(b1762), Michael(b1770), Jonathan b1765 (evidently John2), and possibly Jacob and Joshua. The 1830 census data from Hinds Co., MS, show Michael to be between 30 and 40 years of age and Martha to bein the 40 to 50 age group. Therefore Martha's husband was born between 1790 and 1800 and Martha between 1780 and 1790. This couple was included in the migrations of the families of Thomas, Eleazer, and Jonathan from SC to KY, GA, TN, IL, MS, and TX. The other Ammons boys born within this group of families during that time period can be eliminated as possible husbands for Martha because of age or other known marriages. Therefore Thomas Ammons and Catharine Friday's second son (shown as Gabriel b 5 May 1790 on Ancestry File family charts) is the person, also known as Michael, who married MarthaYoung when she was 22 years of age and he was 16. Any information, database location or advice on these families during the 1700s and early 1800s would be appreciated. Ernie 06-07-2003

The transcript of the 19-year court case was very interesting. I think Hamilton knew what his father had done. What a mess families make of things. But I think you are right when you say that Jonathan was angry at the way the will was written. Jacob wrote the will knowing full well there was a second family. He omitted them anyway; must have been a reason though. Stern Ammons is an unusual name. I have a deed for old Jacob that mentions a Stern Simmons. I wonder if there was any relation. I really don't have much information on old Jacob. The following is IT. I have made some comments also. 1790 Fairfield Co census lists Thomas Amons with two males 16 and over, two malesunder 16; and 5 females. Is one of these Jacob??? Probably not. 28 Jan 1794 between Robert Walton and Elizabeth his wife of Wilkes Co., GA and Jacob Ammons of South Carolina and Co., of Fairfield: 3 pounds sterling, tract containing 400 acres in Wilkes Co., GA I always thought something should turn up in Fairfield Co., but other than John and Elizabeth on records 1n 1795-6 or so, I couldn't find anything. There was the John also. Obviously, Jacob's last residence was Fairfield Co., and John and Elizabeth were probably kin. Jacob never appeared to have a wife with him. She must have died before he arrived in Wilkes Co., . Do you have a better date of birth for Jonathan? The best date I have for Jacob Jr. is 1790. Also do you know when Jonathan married Sarah Orr? He was married to her before 1821 as he was a legal legatee in the estate of John Orr. 25 December 1797 between John Grice & Elisabeth his wife and Jacob Ammons on Soap Creek containing 109 acres. 5 July 1800 Jacob Hammons and Elizabeth to Jacob Ammons Lincoln Cunty GA I always wondered if this was an error but there were Hammons in Lincoln Co. as well as Jacob and his family. In fact the our Ammons are listed as Hammons on the 1830 census. 1820 Wilkes Co., GA Jacob. 1827 Land Lottery Jacob Ammons Rev. Sol. of Lincoln Co., Lot 43 Carroll County. 1827 Land Lottery Jacob Ammons Rev. Sol. of Lincoln Co., Lot 232 Lee County. 1830 Lincoln Co., GA Hammons. Will dated 3 Sep 1827, probated 21 Nov. 1831. And you know the rest of the story...... sure wish we knew the opening chapters. Angie

Yes, I do have this will and when it was probated in court. The MS court records state he died Dec. 22, 1831 but the will was probated 21 Nov. 1831. The court case probably has an estimated date - perhaps Jacob died Nov. 22 and the family thought it was in Dec. I'm looking for old Jacob's parentage. John & Elizabeth who were in Fairfield at one time. John & Charity moved on but I would like to find old Jacob's parents and prove that connection. Some of these Ammons are very confusing. Angie

Buried Probably Lincoln Co., GA He was willed the family SC land upon his parents' deaths.

On this tree, it now appears that William Jacob Ammons is probably the same person as Jacob Ammons and William Ammons, three persons instead of one.

Ammons-341 and Ammons-254 appear to represent the same person because: Same name and death date & location. Same Certificate of Service used as a source (or in biography). This appears to be the same man.
