Stephen Ames is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A002267.

Stephen Ames was born on 16 Oct 1762 in Ashburnham, Worcester, Province of Massachusetts Bay.[1] He was the son of Stephen Ames and Abigail Foster.

Stephen married Dorcas Buell on 14 Sep 1786 in Litchfield, Litchfield, Connecticut.

Stephen was a blacksmith by trade. Later in life, he worked as a carpenter.

In 1816, Stephen and Dorcas left New England for Ohio. That same year, Stephen purchased 100 acres of land in Kirtland for $264.52 from Marshall Brunson. However, Marshall Brunson had failed to obtain title to this land from the rightful owner, Henry Champion. Mr. Champion was granted ultimately granted an ejectment order against Henry Champion in the Court of Common Pleas on 22 Dec 1822, which in resulted in Stephen Ames and several others being evicted from the property. Stephen was unable to pay the additional $152.54 that Mr. Champion required to complete the sale.[2]

Stephen was seriously injured in 1814 when heavy logs fell upon him and broke both of his knees and shoulders. He suffered some sort of break within his body c. 1818, and then had a stroke of paralysis in 1822. Though he tried his best to work through the pain, Stephen's injuries had made it so difficult for him to earn a living that he was at risk of becoming dependent upon the town. His adult children were also struggling to get by, and unable to help him.[2]

Stephen passed away on 2 Nov 1825 in Kirtland, Lake, Ohio. He was buried at Kirtland South Cemetery in Kirtland.[3]

Revolutionary War

On 14 Mar 1781, Stephen enlisted at Amherst, Hillsborough, New Hampshire, as a Private in Captain Moses Dustin's Company in the 2nd Regiment New Hampshire Militia commanded by Colonel George Reed, for a term of 3 years. Stephen Ames also is noted as having served as George Washington's Life Guard. [4]

On 21 Jun 1781, he was taken prisoner at Little Falls, New York, following a skirmish with Tories and Mohawk Indians, and held prisoner in Canada for 5 months. He was released at Boston, Massachusetts on 28 Nov 1782 during a prisoner.

Following his release, he was transferred to Captain Joseph Potter's Company, Major Waits Battalion in the New Hampshire line. He served in this capacity from 1 Apr 1783, till 24 Nov 1783 when he was transferred to another regiment until he was honorably discharged at West Point on 30 Jun 1784.

The preceding military information was largely adapted from Stephen's Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty Land Application File.[2]

Ave, I have done some additions to this profile, of note is that Stephen Ames is recorded in a list of Life Guards

for George Washington and his regiment was the 2nd New Hampshire...I have edited your note on his unit and the 1776 sticker to show this.

Excellent catch, Beryl! Thank you for updating the information. Would you believe that as detailed as Stephen was in his pension application, he never mentioned that he was one of George Washington's Guards? But, you are absolutely correct! Muster rolls show that Stephen was detached from his company in 1783 to serve as a guard for George Washington. Stephen was also one of the guards that brought George Washington's personal paperwork and baggage back to Mount Vernon in the fall of 1783. Thanks again!
