Biography
Johann Wilhelm Altman (William) was born 14 Nov 1724 in Herbitzheim, a French controlled German territory in Alsace, now Bas-Rhin in France. His parents were Johann Jacob Altman and Anna Maria Eisenmann.[1]

There are three additional Altman children (George, Susannah and Christina) who are traditionally listed as siblings, however other researchers contests this.
William arrived in the Pennsylvania colony on 15 Sep 1749, with his parents and siblings. He is listed as Wilhem Altman on the passenger list of the Phoenix, mastered by John Mason, registered at the Philadelphia Court House, by Joshua Maddox esquire. The ship travelled from Rotterdam via Cowes in England, noting the people came from from Zweybrech, Nassau, Wirtemberg & Palatinate. [2]

John William served as a frontier ranger in Capt Christopher Truby's company of Westmoreland County PA Militia, during the American Revolution (rank of Private 1778-1783). He was also in 1st Battalion, under Capt Jacob Painter, in Continental Line Pennsylvania. During his service he
"suffered depredation", which could mean he saw battle.[4][5]
He died on 19 Jun 1798 in Westmoreland County, PA and was buried in Brush Creek Cemetery, Irwin, Westmoreland County. [6]
