James Almy is part of a Bahamian family.

Biography

James Gould Almy was born 14 March 1772 in Newport, Rhode Island to Captain Benjamin Almy and Mary Gould Almy,

He married Martha Matilda Bowles, daughter of Leonard Bowles and Elizabeth Ellis Bowles of the Bahama Islands, 4 August 1792 at Christ Church, Nassau. The marriage was noted in Newport, Rhode Island, the home of James G Almy: "James Gould Almy, and Martha Matilda Bowles; m. at New Providence, Bahama Islands, by Rev. James Brisbane, Aug, 4, 1792."

The Almys had three children, all born in the Bahamas: Leonard Rustat Almy, Katherine Matilda Almy and James Gould Almy. Shortly after James' birth, Martha Matilda Almy died in Newport.

James Almy of New Providence, married, second, Mira/Myra Elliot, daughter of Samuel Elliot and Elizabeth Greenleaf Elliot, 25 March 1801 in New Bedford, Massachusetts. They had children Edward Pope Almy, William Hield Almy, Myra Matthews Johnston Almy, Elizabeth Greenleaf Almy, and Maria Almy, who lived for less than a day. Mira Elliot Almy died the day after her infant daughter, in Savannah, Georgia.

James Gould Almy served in the War of 1812 as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Georgia Militia, Company: 1 REGIMENT (JOHNSTON'S).

James G Almy married a third time, 3 June 1813, in Chatham County, Georgia to Mrs Henrietta Waldburger Hoskins, widow of Zachariah Hoskins.

James G Almy was a merchant-mariner. He lived in the Bahama Islands for more than a decade and later resided in Savannah, Georgia. He appeared in Savannah court documents in 1815,1816, and 1819 for debts he owed.

James Gould Almy died 23 November 1827 at Matanzas, Cuba. The Providence Phenix, Providence, RI noted his death: "James Gould, aged 54 years, son of Capt. Benjamin, of Newport, at Matanzas, W.I."
