Jacob married Elisabeth Margaretha Abel 8 Apr 1844. The marriage is recorded at the Horrheim Evangelische Kirche[2] The entry appears to say the banns were read at both Horrheim and Ludwigsburg and that the marriage took place at Ludwigsburg, which is about 11 miles from Horrheim. Both Jacob and Elisabetha were from Horrheim, so it's unclear why they would be married in Ludwigsburg. The entry does appear to say that Jacob was a soldier, so perhaps that explains it.
Jacob and Elisabetha had at least 3 children in Horrheim:
Friederika, b. 27 Sep 1846[5] (She is sometimes called Rachel in the United States.[6])
The church's family register notes Jacob, his wife, and 3 daughters emigrated to America in 1847.[7] Certainly by 1850 the family was living in Prospect Township, Marion County, Ohio, and in that census, the 3 year old child is listed as born in Germany and the 2 year old child as born in Ohio.[8]
In addition to the 3 daughters born in Horrheim, Jacob and Elizabeth had 8 children born in Ohio:
Wilhelmina, b. abt 1848 and recorded in the 1850 census as William[8], the 1860 census as Areminta[6]
Jacob died 30 or 31 May 1883 in Pleasant Township, Marion County, Ohio of heart disease.[11][12] The county death records say 30 May[11], but his grave marker says 31 May[12]. He is buried in Marion Cemetery, Marion, Ohio with his wife.[12]
Jacob's will, dated 5 Oct 1862, was proved in Marion County, Ohio Probate Court 27 Jun 1883. A handy list of next of kin residing in Ohio was given:
The will left wife "Elizabeth Margaret Almintinger", in lieu of dower, the 115 acres where they then lived, 2 acres in Prospect Township, and all the property not otherwise dispoed of. $100 was to be divided among the children as they came of age, along with the proceeds of the sale of the 2 acres in Prospect Township. At Elizabeth's death, all the children still living were to share equally.[13]
Note on Spelling
The spelling of this surname in records varies a bit - 1 L or 2; E, I, or A for the 2nd vowel; sometimes it's not clear both Ns are there. (The person keeping the Horrheim church records has challenging handwriting...) The Horrheim baptism records generally use 2 Ls. In Marion County, Ohio, some of the family used the 2 L spelling and some the 1 L spelling. In the probate record of his will alone, Almendinger, Allmendinger and Allmintinger are used.
The spelling of his given name also varies between Jacob and Jakob in the records, but on his baptismal record the spelling is Jacob Allmendinger.
