Some researchers believe that Hugh Allison came to America in 1736. Tax records show him to have been in Chester Co., Pennsylvania in 1753. Ten years later there are deed records for him in Harford Co., Maryland. From there he moved to York District, South Carolina.

Hugh Allison was born in Scotland in 1714. At the age of 22, he immigrated to America, landing on September 13, 1736, and first settling in Harford County, Maryland.

About 1738, in Chester County, Pennsylvania, he married Margaret Hope (born before 1721), a daughter of James and Anne McCrockey Hope of Scottish heritage.

In 1769, they travelled down the Great Wagon Road and settled on the upper waters of Bullock’s Creek in the western section of what in 1785 became York County, South Carolina.
Hugh and Margaret had seven known children:

Hugh Allison was listed in the Harford County, Maryland tax list of 1774 as a taxable person in Bush River Upper Hundred, along with his son Robert.[1]

Hugh served in the American Revolution as a Lieutenant in Capt's Venable & Moffitt's Company, SC Militia. He was a wagoner in Gen Sumpter's South Carolina Brigade, providing a wagon and team for 144 days service.Daughters of the American Revolution, DAR Genealogical Research Databases, database online, (http://www.dar.org/ : accessed Jan 1, 2023), "Record of Robert Allison", Ancestor # A001990.

Hugh Allison died in York County on March 7, 1799, and is buried somewhere in Beersheba Presbyterian Churchyard, his tombstone and that of his wife having been lost to time.[2]
