NSSAR Ancestor #: P-100728
Rank: Patriotic Service

Zachariah was born in 1735. He was the son of William Allen and Mary Unknown. This is shown by church records in Maryland. He passed away in 1790. [1]

Will His will is dated 27 Sep 1789 and was proved 27 March 1790. >[2][3]

Residence In 1779 he can be found in Orange County, North Carolina, USA. [4] His will is also recorded in that County so it looks to be his residence from 1779 to 1790.

The Zachariah Allen who appears on the 1790 census in Pitt County, North Carolina is most likely not him.[5] One reason is that his death is somewhere before May 1790 (date his will was probated) which makes it unlikely he was alive for the enumeration. Also Pitt County is a fair distance from Orange County and the 1789/1790 will puts Zachariah firmly in Orange County.

There are several men named Zachariah Allen in North Carolina and it can be hard distinguishing between them.

Family

For identification of Zachariah's wives and children, the writings of his granddaughter Lavina Allen are crucial. She started writing a family record in 1839, and presumably got a lot of her information from her father William Allen as she was unmarried and living with her father at the time. He would have known who were his full and half siblings.

According to Lavina, Zachariah's first wife was Lavina Jones and his second wife was Mary Woody. His children with Lavina were Susanna, George, Elizabeth, William , and James. His children with Mary were: Mary, Jane, Eleanor, Sarah, John, Robert, Joseph, Ruth, Lavina, and Zachariah.

Zachariah's will names all of those children except for Susanna and Eleanor. Presumably they died before their father. The order of the children is the same between Lavina's listing and the will. Using the known birth dates for William and James Allen (the youngest from the first marriage), the first marriage for Zachariah can be estimated to be around 1760, while the second marriage is estimated at 1771. That would give the appropriate time for all the children of the second marriage to be born before the date of the will.

Most of these sources belong to Zachariah Allen (Allen-9560) and not this Zachariah Allen. There is little proof that Erasmus Allen had a son Zachariah -- and very unlikely for him to have a son born and raised in Maryland. The Zachariah Allen born in MD in 1735 is the one who married Lavina Jones and then Mary Woody. He moved to NC and is the one on the tax lists in Orange County and the one who had a will probated in 1789. Much of this is confirmed by the writings of Lavina Allen, his granddaughter.

The Zachariah Allen who married Mary Woody & Lavinia Jones was the child of William Allen (Allen-7616) & Mary (Unknown-197710).

This seems like a match for spouses, son James but parents are different. Does Allen-34996 have the wrong parents maybe? (orphaned) https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Allen-34996

The spouses have duplicates to merge if you determine they do match.

Allen-34996 has incorrect parents. See Allen-9560 for correct, documented parents and spouses.

The James Allen (Allen-2463) who given as the son of Zachariah Allen (Allen-34996) is definitely NOT the son of Zachariah Allen (Allen-9560). I have not seen any documentation as to an actual father for that James Allen -- other than all those unsourced family trees that have confused all the various Allen males that existed on the eastern seaboard in the 1700s.

If James Allen (Allen-2463) were unlinked from parents then the two Zachriah Allens, the two Lavina Jones, and the two Mary Woodys could all be merged as they have no conflicting information other than the wrong parents for Allen-34996.

Allen-34996 and Allen-9560 are not ready to be merged because: Allen-34996 and Allen-9560 are not ready to be merged because: While the majority of the data between the two profiles match, the issue is the discrepancies in his wive(s). Zachariah Allen of Orange County, NC was known to have two wives -- Lavina Jones and Mary Woody. Until the profiles for the two Lavina Jones can be settled, as well as the issue of properly identifying the correct James Allen as a son to Zachariah, these profiles remain better unmerged.
Maybe have another look at that merge??? The DAR lists both wives, as do both profiles. BUT the parents???

While other elements have been cleaned up on the profile, now the problem is with someone linking a Joseph Allen as a son to him -- and his age clearly is not matching with the correct Joseph Allen. Yes there are multiple issues with these two men -- and the sad fact is that people keep linking the man from the DAR database with a supposed son of Erasmus Allen.

I am a direct descendant of Zachariah Allen through his granddaughter Lavina. I have her writings on the family history that explicitly state his wives and which child goes to which wife.

Allen-34996 and Allen-9560 appear to represent the same person because: removing unmerged match to propose merge, as the two are clear duplicates, as are the two wives Lavinia (Jones) Allen.
