Private Moses Allen served with 3rd Regiment, Dutchess County Militia, New York Militia during the American Revolution.

Birth and Family

Moses Allen[1][2][3] [4][5]was born before July, 1739,[6] in Sturbridge, Worcester, Massachusetts Bay Colony. [7] Records indicate that he was christened on 01 Jul 1739, in Sturbridge, Massachusetts, therefore his birth would have been before this christening date.
Moses was the son of Moses Allen and Hannah (Knapp) Allen.

Marriage

Moses married Chloe Ward circa 1764, in Dover, Dutchess County, New York. [8]
Chloe Ward was the daughter of Peter Ward and Deborah Buell. She was born on 1 Jan 1743/4, in Killingworth, New London County, Connecticut.[9][10][11]

Children

Moses and Chloe Allen had a total of eight children during their marriage:
1. Deborah (Allen) Gifford - Deborah ALLEN was born on 25 Jan 1765,[12] She died on 16 Dec 1841, at the age of 76. She died in Easton, Washington County, New York.
2. Catherine "Caty" (Allen) Turner - Catherine "Caty" ALLEN[13] was born in 1766.[14]She died in 1817 at the age of 51 in Sheldon, Genesee County, New York.[15][16][17].
3. Sarah (Allen) Woodworth -Sarah ALLEN[18] was born after 1766.[19] She died on 20 July 1821 at the age of 55 in Mayville, Chautauqua County, New York.
4. Lydia (Allen) Wilson -Lydia ALLEN was born on 15 Nov 1771, in Dover, Dutchess County, New York.[20][21]
5. Peter Buell Allen - PETER BUELL ALLEN was born on 24 Nov 1775, in Dutchess County, New York.[22][23][24] He served in the War of 1812, in the 20th Regt, NY State Militia. [25] He died on 13 Jun 1833, at the age of 56. He died in Terre Haute, Vigo County, Indiana.[26][27][28]
6. Mary (Allen) Durfee - Mary ALLEN[29] was born on 1 Jun 1778.[30]She died on 27 Aug 1820, at the age of 42, in Palmyra, Wayne County, New York.[31]
7. Nathaniel Allen - Nathaniel ALLEN was born in 1780, in Dutchess County, New York.[32] He served in the military during the War of 1812, as Deputy Pay Master, NY State Militia.[33] He died on 22 Dec 1832, at the age of 52, in Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky.[34] Nathaniel was buried in Allens Hill Cemetery, Richmond, Ontario County, New York.

Notes on Children

Their son, Peter Buell Allen, fought in the War of 1812; he was a pioneer in western New York and then in Indiana in the new "Western Territories". Grandson Peter Buell Allen, Jr. was an early settler in Arkansas Territory, circa 1840. Peter, son to Moses and Chloe, had a taste for the military. He become a commanded of a regiment at Queestown, where he was captured, and later rose to be a brigadier-general. He was a member of the Legislature from Ontario. He moved in 1816 to Terri Haute, in Indiana. [38]
Nathaniel Allen was the primitive blacksmith of Pittstown. He began as a journeyman at Canandaigua, then started a shop near the tile-factory south of Allen's Hill. Afterwards he worked in a shop on the hill known by his name. Mr. Allen was an officer of militia, sheriff, and a member of the legislature. In 1812 he was commissioner and paymaster on the Niagara frontier. He died in 1833 at Louisville, Kentucky. An only daughter was the first wife of Hon. R. L. Rose, who occupied the homestead on the hill from 1829 till 1857. He later resided at Hagerstown, Maryland."

Military Service

Moses served as a Private with the 3rd Regiment, Dutchess County, New York Militia, during the American Revolution. [39].[40][41] As a result of Moses' service to his country, he was awarded a land bounty grant.

Death and Burial

Moses passed away circa 1796, in Ontario County, New York.[42][43]

"The daughters of Moses Allen became the wives of Elihu Gifford, of Easton, Washington County; Samuel Woodworth of Mayville, Mont.co.; Samuel Robinson of Newark, Wayne Co., Fairing Wilson, of Stockbridge Mass; Roswell Turner of Pittstown Ont., and Stephen Durfee of Palmyra, Wayne county."[44]
