Biography

Horace Alexander was a Latter Day Saint pioneer.

Horace Martin Alexander was born on February 15, 1812, in Orange, Virginia, to Frances Ehart, age 39, and James Alexander, age 42. He married Nancy Reeder Walker in Winchester, Indiana, on September 14, 1834, when he was 22 years old.

He served in the military beginning in July 1846 when he was 34 years old. He departs with the Mormon Battalion, leaving his wife and children in the care of his brother-in-law James Henry Rollins, ^[1] who later built her a cabin at Winter Quarters.

On 16 July 1847 at the Pueblo de Los Ángeles he was mustered out of Army service. (Need Date)1847 he departs California and arrives at the Great Salt Lake on (need date). (This sections needs updating. The information from Horace Martin Alexander Company info previously used has been proven to be incorrect. There was no such Company).

There is a possibility that Horace returned to California to work over the Winter and and returned in the Spring with his earnings. ^[2]

In October 1848 Horace hears the news that the wagon train carrying his family has arrived at the fort at Salt Lake so goes to meet them. He learns of his wife Nancy's death from his mother-in-law, Nancy Cressy Walker. "The mother died in childbirth and the father not knowing of her death and when hearing of the company coming he went out to meet his wife and family and did not know of her death until he reached the wagon where his children were being taken care of by their grandmother, Nancy Walker, and there he was told by Grandma the sad story of his wife's death. Mother and baby buried in the same grave. No one can tell the heart rending scene of the father and children. ^{[3] [4]}
