Findagrave and the records of DAR list him as being born in Scotland in 1739.[2][3] while Ruth Peterson's book records him as having been born in Ireland.[1] His military service might need clarification. According to Ruth Peterson's book, he served as a captain in the 4th North Carolina Regiment during the Revolutionary War.[1] DAR's database does recognize him as a patriot but shows that he signed an oath of allegiance and does not list any other service.[3]
