Sergeant James Alexander served with 7th Virginia Regiment (1776), Continental Army during the American Revolution.

On the fifteenth day of February one thousand eight hundred and thirty eight personally appeared before me James Records a justice of the peace in and for the county aforesaid Jerusha Alexander a Resident of the county of Boone and State of Kentucky aged eighty three years who being first sworn according to law doath on her oath make the Following Declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made by the Act of Congress passed July the fourth eighteen hundred and thirty six.

That she is old and weak & unable from bodily infirmity to appear in person in court and that she is the Widow of the late James Alexander who was a Sergent on the Virginia Continental or State line during the war of the Revolution under the command of Captain Joseph Spencer and other officers not Recollected She well Recollects of hearing her Husband the aforesaid often State that he was an orderly Sergent under Gen. Gats [sic: Horatio Gates] and was at his defeat in Seventeen Hundred and Eighty [Battle of Camden SC, 16 Aug 1780]

She dose not think he was under Captain Spencer at that time and from her great Age and lost of memory she is at this great length of time unable to State the Different officers he was under but do well know of her own personal knowledge that he was engaged in the Regular servis during the war of the Revolution and was in the servis at least six years During of which time he frequently Returned home and staid from two to three weak on a furlow and Returnd to the servis.

My Suffering and privation ware great during his Services in the war of the Revolution and well Recollects of having him tell of his great Suffering in the Army and particular at the Defeat of Gen Gats and of his allmost Starving to death.

She further Declars that she was married to the said James Alexander in Orange County State of Virginia on the tenth day of Aprile Seventeen Hundred and Seventy Six and that her husband the aforesaid James Alexander Died on the tenth day of Aprile Eighteen Hundred and seventeen and that she has Remained a widow Ever since.

And she further States that she thinks that sum where about the year Seventeen Hundred and ninety that her husband had his House burnt and his family Record Discharges and all his papers was burnt up in said House.
