Biography

Mary (Adams) Abel is a part of US Black heritage.

Mary (Adams) Abel was a Latter Day Saint pioneer.

Mary was born in 1829. She passed away in 1877.

Mary Ann was born in 1829 or 1830 in Tennessee. It is unknown whether she was born into slavery or how she arrived in Cincinnati where she met Elijah. When she was 15 or 16, Mary married Elijah Able on 16 February 1847 in Hamilton, Ohio, United States.^[1]

In the 1850 census Mary (age 19) was in Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio, United States. Elijah was 42 and their son Maroni was 2.^[2]

She travelled to the Utah Territory in 1853 with Elijah and their children Moroni, Enoch, Mary Ann, and Rebecca Ann in the Appleton M Harmon Company. They arrived on 16 October 1853.^{[3] [4]}

In the 1860 census Mary (age 28) was at 13th Ward Great Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah Territory, United States.^[5] By this time the following people are included in her family

For at least part of the time they lived in Salt Lake City Mary and Elijah ran the Farnham House, boarding house.^[6]

In the 1870 census Maryann (age 38) and Elijah have moved to Ogden, Weber, Utah Territory, United States. She has three more children Mary, Maggie, and Flora.^[7]

Mary was only 48 when she died on 27 November 1877 in Ward 13, Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah.^[8] She was buried in Salt Lake City Cemetery.^[9][10]
