Abraham, the son of John S and Sarah Boice Adams, was born 22 November 1755, in Wantage Township, Sussex, New Jersey. Little is known of his father except that after his parent’s marriage in Great Egg Harbor the family returned to inherited farmland in Wantage. There is no information regarding Abraham’s wife Sarah Fornum, except their marriage in New Jersey records 4 March 1778. At the time of their marriage, they were both about age 23. Although the exact town of their first four children’s births is not known, it’s likely that they were born in Wantage Township, Sussex, New Jersey: the 1st child, a son Elijah in 1779; the 2nd child, a son Benjamin C in about 1781; the 3rd child, a daughter Susannah in 1783; and the 4th child, a daughter Margaret in 1784.

Abraham is listed in the Sussex, New Jersey Militia records as a Sergeant in the US Revolutionary War. When the war began in 1775, he was only twenty years old. Other records indicate that his father John, (38) as well as his two brothers John and David were also in the war. Fortunately, all men survived the many battles that occurred in this state.

Either Abraham had money from the sale of inherited family land or he was granted Bounty land in exchange for his military service or both. Regardless, after the war he moved his family from New Jersey 90 miles west across the Delaware River to Pennsylvania. Five more children of Sarah and Abraham were born in Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne, Pennsylvania: the 5th child, a daughter Hannah in 1786; the 6th child, a daughter Sarah in 1787; the 7th child, a daughter Mary Ann in 1790; the 8th child, a daughter Martha in 1796; and the 9th child, a son John in 1800. Several of the Adams’ children are not found as adults in any records and may have died young.

Abraham’s oldest son “Elijah Adams arrived in 1807. Then in 1808, Abraham with his wife Suzanne, his young son John, daughter Sarah with her husband Daniel Bennett and his brother David,” all came to Harlem together. Abraham Adams moved to what was then called the Western Reserve, and in Delaware County, Ohio, took claim to a tract of land and established his home on the frontier. He became one of the prominent early farmers of Delaware County.

Abraham in found in the 1820 Census living in Delaware County, but two years later 22 November 1822, he passed away. His wife Susannah followed him in death ten years later 1 October 1832, both in Harlem Township, Delaware, Ohio. They are both buried in the Harlem Cemetery, Harlem, Delaware, Ohio.
