Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
John Adams Sr. was a Virginia colonist.

John Adams was the son of Gabriel Adams and Priscilla Pearson, born about 1730, Stafford (now Fairfax) County, Colony of Virginia.

Another John Adams of Mill Creek, Halifax (now Pittsylvania) County, Colony of Virginia

A John Adams came to Halifax County, Virginia, about the time of its 1752 organization.[1] This John Adams received a Virginia Land Grant 28 Feb 1754, but he WAS NOT the John Adams of Lunenburg, son of Gabriel Adams and Priscilla Pearson, who married Susannah Wood, 1756. This other John Adams who came to Antrim Parish, Halifax County 1752 had sold part of his land grant to Edward Pauley Jr.(sic) on 16 Aug 1759, land on Mill Creek of Banister River in Halifax County.[2] When Halifax county was divided from Lunenburg, in 1752, it comprehended all that is now Pittsylvania, Henry, Franklin, and Patrick Counties of Virginia. Antrim parish was coextensive with the county.[3]Mill Creek of Banister River, then Halifax County, was actually in present Pittsylvania County, upstream on Banister River from Meadsville in Halifax County.[4] This John Adams of Mill Creek which became Pittsylvania County 1767 purchased land from Paul Pigg per his deeds and was listed as Executor of Pigg's estate in Pittsylvania County 1767.[5]This John Adams d. 1815 Pittsylvania, Virginia, has been identified as the son of William Adams of Charlotte, VA, grandson of John Adams/Elizabeth Johns, great-grandson of John Adams/Katherine Napier of Northumberland & Stafford, Virginia.[6]

John Adams and wife Susannah Wood of Lunenburg, Colony of Virginia

Phil E. Chappell, an Adams descendant, in his 1900 historical book wrote our John Adams lived in that part of Lunenburg County, Colony of Virginia (1746) which had been previously included in the County of Brunswick. In Lunenburg County John Adams married Susannah Wood, daughter of Richard Wood of Brunswick County, as shown by his will recorded 24 April and proved 4 September 1746 in Brunswick County, Colony of Virginia. Richard Wood willed his estate to his wife, Mary, during her lifetime, then, upon her death, passing to his daughter, Susannah. Her name was shortened to "Susan" by some female descendants, but Susannah Wood Adams signed her name as "Susannah" on 1795 Halifax, Virginia, Deeds. [7] [8]

Soon after John Adams married Susannah Wood in Lunenburg County, Virginia, he and his wife in August 1758 sold his 100 acre inheritance from his father, Gabriel Adams of Fairfax, Virginia. Susannah Wood Adams also relinquished her right of dower in her husband's inherited land on the recorded deed, as written, "land situate lying and being in the county of Fairfax in the Colony and dominion aforesaid containing one hundred acres being part of a grant and tract of five hundred and fifteen acres granted by the proprietors of the Northern Neck of Virginia to the said Gabriel Adams, father of the said Gabriel Adams and John Adams by patent bearing date of Twelfth day of October in the year of our Lord God one thousand seven hundred twenty six and by the said Gabriel Adams and devised unto the said John Adams his son for life, as by the Last Will and Testament by the said Gabriel Adams duly proven and recorded amongst the records of the said county of Fairfax." [9] Also in August 1758 John Adams of Lunenburg purchased eight hundred acres of land on the Reedy Branch of Little Bluestone Creek in Lunenburg County from Drury Stith of Brunswick County, Virginia.[10] John sold part of Reedy Branch, Little Bluestone Creek land 21 Feb 1760 to William White, 3rd husband of Mary (White) Humphries Wood, mother of Susannah Wood Adams.[11][12] John also sold part this land 3 Jun 1760 to John White, likely relative of William White.[13] Little Bluestone Creek is a tributary of Bluestone Creek which flows into the Roanoke River just west of the John Kerr Reservoir, north of Clarksville in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, in close proximity to the North Carolina and Halifax, Virginia, lines.[14][15]

Living in Lunenburg County, Virginia, John and Susannah Wood Adams had eight children: William Adams, Sylvester Adams, Richard Adams, John Adams, Philip Adams, Benjamin Adams, Susan Adams, and Elizabeth Adams. Although Chappell in his book listed three Adams sons married three daughters of Col. George Boyd, only William Adams married Elizabeth Boyd and Richard Adams married Hannah Boyd. [7] Halifax, Virginia, Estate records revealed Sylvester Adams married Rebecca Boyd, daughter of Patrick Harrison Boyd, Jr. and wife Ezard, son of Patrick Harrison Boyd, Sr. and wife Rachel Grissom.[16][17]

Migration to Caswell County (now Person) North Carolina

Leaving Lunenburg County, Virginia, John Adams and family received land grants in Caswell County (now Person County), North Carolina, on Bluewing (Blue Wing) Creek.[18][19] Bluewing is located at the northeast corner of Person County in Holloway Township at the Virginia state line adjoining Halifax County, Virginia.[20][21]

Migration to Black Walnut, Halifax County, Virginia

On 9 October 1784, John Adams and family left Bluewing Creek, Caswell (now Person) County, North Carolina and bought 841.5 acres for 820 pounds on Mill Creek from William Lawson, in the Black Walnut Community of Halifax County, Virginia.[22] John Adams Sr, his sons Will Adams and Richard Adams and their families were listed in the 1785 Heads of Families Census for Halifax County, Virginia, with adjoining neighbors Reuben Pickett, George Boyd, and Richard Wade.[23]

Once settled on the Black Walnut Community homeplace in Halifax County John Adams sold his Caswell County, North Carolina, land to Stephen Jones, 15 Oct 1790.[24]

John Adams Sr. and wife Susannah Wood Adams were still living 26 October 1795 at Black Walnut community in Halifax County, Virginia, when they acknowledged their deed (Deed Bk 16: 459-461) sold to Richard A. Holland also of Halifax County, Virginia, the land John Adams had bought from William Lawson, and whereon William Adams, their son, was then living, along the old road.[25] In 1794 John Adams purchased 197 acres on the north side of Coleman's Creek from Charles Mullins Sr. and son Charles Mullins Jr. It extended to Little Coleman's creek by Boyd's ferry road.[26] This property deed was contested in a lawsuit 1800 by John Adams, Sr. vs the Mullins where sons William Adams, Sylvester Adams, and daughter Susannah Ball gave court depositions along with several neighbors. The neighbor John Hewell on 12 September 1800 gave a final deposition in the presence of John Adams, Sr. and the court justice. The dispute was over the amount of acreage purchased in the deed. [27] The Lawsuit was settled by Halifax County Court on 23 March 1801 and John Adams Sr. was judged to pay the defendant costs of the suit. [28]

On 15 December 1800 John Adams Sen'r of Halifax County deeded to Daniel Collins also of Halifax, 101 1/2 acres for 115 pounds paid by Collins, a tract on the north side of Coleman's Creek in Halifax County adjoining Baird's line and the north fork of Coleman's Creek. Witness was Syl Adams. John Adams Sen'r signed the deed with his traditional mark, a line with three marks across. The deed and receipt was acknowledge by John Adams, Sen'r on 22 December 1800 before the county clerk and ordered recorded.[29] The Adams home plantation was at Black Walnut Community on Mill and Coleman Creeks, Halifax County, Virginia. The Black Walnut community in 1889 was renamed Cluster Springs, Virginia.[30][31][32]

The Federal Census for Halifax, Virginia, 1800 is no longer extant, but 1820 and 1830 censuses do exist.[33] FamilySearch LDS Microfilm was researched for John Adams, Sr. and his sons by microfilm for Halifax, Virginia, Personal Property Tax Lists to ascertain what year John Adams, Sr. had died due to property no longer being listed. The microfilm for Halifax, Virginia, Property Tax Lists 1800-1812 listed John Adams, Sr. and his sons together in the Southern District of Joseph Landford(sic) List each year 1800 through 1812.[34] The Halifax, Virginia, Tax Lists for 1813-1821 listed John Adams Sr. with his sons also listed. By 1816 John Adams Sr. was no longer listed with property which indicated his year of death.[35]

Who is the John Adams that is the father of Margaret Adams Lemley (Adams-2010) ? Margaret's profile names her parents as Adams-6315 and Wood-3562, but she is listed as born in 1815 in Tennessee. Obviously wrong.
