Philip Adams was the youngest son of William and Elizabeth (Boyd) Adams, born in Halifax County, Virginia. The date of his birth is unknown. The date given, 1789, is an estimate, two years after the birth of his brother John
Philip married Martha De Graffenreid, a descendant of Baron De Graffenreid and sister of Ann De Graffenreid who was the second wife of John Chappell of Halifax County.
He had one son named Jefferson who was killed in the Civil War leading a Confederate charge at the battle of Gettysburg.
