Biography

Mary was born about 1765 in South Carolina. 96 District was created in 1768. Her family lived in that district.

Mary lived with her parents on the Adair plantation. Her parents were James Adair and Hannah Ross. Her father was a cooper or barrel maker.

War of the Revolution

War came to South Carolina in 1775 after news arrived from the Massachusetts Colony of the Battles at Lexington and Concord.

Four important Revolutionary Battles took place in what would later become Laurens District and Laurens County.

On July 15, 1776, Patriot forces defeated a combined Indian and Loyalist attack on Lyndley's Fort near Rabun Creek. At the battle of Musgrove's Mill on August 18, 1780, a force of Patriots defeated the British and Loyalist forces achieving a decisive victory in the two-day battle. On December 29, 1780, a Loyalist detachment was defeated at Hammond's Store near present-day Clinton. On November 19, 1781, at Hayes Station (eight miles southwest of Clinton), Loyalist leader Major William "Bloody Bill" Cunningham attacked a contingent of Patriots, slaughtering eighteen (18).

Mary's father was a soldier during the war. He served in the South Carolina Militia and was Wagon Master for Colonel James Williams’ Regiment during the time before the fall of Charlestown.

Life after the Revolutionary War

Mary was married to John James Prater/Prather in Old Ninety Six District in about 1783. She and John had a daughter Hannah, born in 1784. The area where the Adair and Prather families lived became part of Laurens District when it was created in 1785 and the old 96 District was abolished.

Mary and John also had another daughter, Verlinda, who was born in 1796.

Mary's father died in August of 1818. Her husband John is named in the document found in the deed records of Laurens District for the division of the estate of her father. Mary died in about 1822. Her husband John died about 1823.
