He was a Revolutionary War soldier, enlisting in the New York line 8th Company 3rd Regiment on December 17, 1776. New York Continental Line 1st and 3rd Regiment. (DAR: United States Congressional Serial Set Issue 6924 - Eithteenth Report of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution - Washington Government Printing Office - 1916) He received a 600-acre grant of bounty lands in return for his service.[1]This land was in Ulysses township (Tomkins County) New York[2]and he sold his right to it in July, 1783.[1]He receive a Military Pension, Revolutionary War, August 4, 1790, New York.[2]
The General Assembly of Connecticut made him an ensign of the 3rd Company in the 26th Regiment of state troops in May of 1781.[1]
Joel Ackley purchased land in East Hartland in about June, 1766.[1] He and his wife joined the church there on August 2, 1770.[1]On April 30, 1783 he purchased his brother Hezekiah's home or property adjoining it for 180,35 pounds. This property was in the western part of Simsbury, now Granby.[1]In the 1790 census he is recorded as a resident in Hartland vicinity.[1]It is recorded that he bought land there as late as February 1792 and sold land in 1791, 1794, and 1798.[1]

Lois was baptized May 26, 1776; probably it was she who d. Jan. 7, 1838, having married April 18, 1794, Levi Chapman (Levi, Levi, Joseph, John, Robert), moved to Ohio where she had, among others, children named "Joel" and "Nancy," presumably named for her father, brother, and sister).
A person by the name of Joel Ackling, who may have been a member of the family, died in Columbia County, New York in 1791 - this is where Hazekiah Ackley had probably moved.[1]
