Jacobus was born January 21, 1758. He was baptized September 24, 1759 in at the Reformed Dutch Church of New Hackensack, New York. "Jacobus quite generally went by the shortened name of 'Cobus, but the English equivalent James was employed more or less, and in signing his will he makes use of it. He lived just north of New Hackensack and was an extensive farmer--in fact, in Dutch the very name Ackerman signifies farmer. In his latter days he has been described as 'a jovial old gentleman who like to play with his grandchildren, and joke with them and speak Dutch to bewilder them.'
He left a large property for those times, dividing it among twelve of his children to the exclusion of Matthew, and says: 'As my relative, Matthew Van Bunschoten, adopted my son Matthew and promised to provide for him and has done so, and in a far greater degree than I can possibly car for the rest of my children, as a testimony of my affection for him I will and direct that after the decease of my beloved wife he receive my Scott's Bible and Scott's works.'"[1] He died January 28, 1835, and was buried in the New Hackensack churchyard.
