Joseph Acken is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A000261.

Joseph Acken (Ackens, Acker, Akers); born in Scotland. He came to America in the ship "Blue Mountain" in 1751, landed at Amboy, married Rebecca Crane of Westfield on November 19, 1757, and moved to Westfield to Talcott Farm house. While on his knees praying, British soldiers came to the house at 9 p.m. in search of the "old rebel." The house was dark inside with moonlight outside. He escaped, none the less, out the back door in his stocking feet and hid in a shock of corn "while the British soldiers were thrusting their bayonets in the bed."

He was a Private in Essex Co. militia repeatedly and "was assigned to any company or regiment which needed a complement of men." He was in the battle of Trenton, December 25, 1776, and believed to have been in the battle of Monmouth, June 28, 1778. He had a memorial window in the Presbyterian church in Westfield, N.J.

The above information is stated to be from the records of Adj. General's office of the State of New Jersey.

The above information was found in, The Revolutionary Cemetery in Westfield, New Jersey by Henry C. Hamilton, D.D.S. June, 1975.
