At the time of the American Revolutionary War, Samuel and his wife, Martha Collins made their residence in the Ninety-Six District of South Carolina, where Samuel served in the military as a Sergeant. According to a family letter in my possession, Samuel Abney Sr. was killed in a raid conducted by a Tory renegade named Cunningham, whose men swept through the Edgefield District and killed men known to be on the Patriot side. Samuel Abney was back home on his farm after participating in the battle of Eutaw Springs, which was the last major engagement in the Carolinas.
