Sergeant George Abney served with Lower Ninety-Six District Regiment, South Carolina Militia during the American Revolution.

George Abney, s/o Dannett & Cassandra A. Abney of Saluda Co. SC. Wife thought to be Sarah Griffin, d/o Joshua Griffin.

George served in the Rev. War in the SC Militia under General Andrew Pickens. DAR# S16591. SAR Patriot #: P-100294.

While residing within 18 miles of Ninety Six District, S.C., he enlisted July 3rd, 1775 as Private in Capt. Henry Foster’s Co., Col. Leroy Hammond’s S.C. Regiment. He was marched through the mountains to the head of the Savannah River against the Indians who were then invading the frontiers of S.C. , while in this tour was in two engagements with the Indians and was discharged after serving four months. Later served and a Private then 2nd Sargent in Capt. Henry Foster’s Co., Col. Leroy Hammond’s S.C. Regiment, this tour was not less than 12 months. He enlisted in 1780 or 1781 as a Private under Capt. William Butler, William Sinfield and Tolls, in S.c. Troops scouting and ranging against the Tories. He was in the siege of Augusta and Ninety Six. He was discharged after serving 18 months on this tour. Pension claim- S-16591, Last payment was April 5, 1838. He referred to to his wife in 1822 as 66 yrs of age, but did not give name.

The Revolutionary era one-acre site for the ABNEY Meetinghouse near the head of Persimmon Lick Creek and a mile south of Higgins Ferry (Saluda River), was donated by George Abney in 1798. The subscriptions to build and maintain the non-denominational meetinghouse were collected in 1803.

He was the first Abney to settle in the State of Indiana.
