Service during the American Revolution
Private Abel Abell served with 3rd Connecticut Regiment (1777), Continental Army during the American Revolution.
During the Revolutionary War, Private Abel Abell fought in Captain Warner's company, Col. Samuel Wyllys' 3rd Connecticut Regiment, and was held as a prisoner on the British prison ship "Jersey" [1][2]
Note: [HMS Jersey was a 60-gun fourth rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy, built to the 1733 proposals of the 1719 Establishment of dimensions at Plymouth Dockyard, and launched on 14 June 1736.[1] She is perhaps most noted for her service as a prison ship during the American Revolutionary War.]
Abel and brother Elijah established a saw and grist mill at the foot of Chestnut Hill, continued after their deaths by Jabez Lathrop Abell (Able's Son) who later removed to Illinois. They established a reputation for enterprise, integrity and worthy citizenship.
