Biography

EZRA ABBOTT,[1] b. 22 Aug 1756 son of George and Sarah (Abbott) Abbott;[2] d. 21 Feb 1837;[3][4] m. 1st 21 Nov 1782,[5] BETTY ANDREWS, b. 12 May 1762 daughter of Thomas and Mary (Burnham) Andrews; Betty d. 25 Aug 1794. Ezra m. 2nd at Boscawen 10 May 1795,[6] ANNER CHOATE, b. at Ipswich 12 Jan 1758 daughter of Thomas and Dorothy (Proctor) Choate;[7] Anner d. 21 Mar 1798. Ezra m. 3rd at Boscawen, 15 Nov 1798,[8] JANE JACKMAN, b. at Boscawen, 20 Dec 1767 daughter of Benjamin and Jane (Woodman) Jackman; Jane d. 2 May 1847.

Ezra resided in Concord where he farmed and owned a small property. According to his son, George, Ezra Abbott served as surveyor of highways for the town of Concord for a number of years. [9]

As part of his Revolutionary War pension application, Ezra provided a statement of his circumstances on 18 July 1820. The total value of his estate was appraised at $162 with $80 in real estate and $82 in personal estate. He had debts of $50. His household in 1820 was his wife aged 52 and children Betsy aged 20, Ann aged 19, George aged 17, Jane aged 14, Benjamin J. aged 12, and Sarah aged 5. The real estate was sold in 1821. Ezra reported that he suffered a rupture due to his hard labor in farming and was no longer able to work.[10]

In 1830, the household of Ezra Abbott was six persons at Concord: one male 70 to 79, one female 60 to 69, two males 20 to 29, one female 15 to 19, and one female 20 to 29.[11]

On 6 October 1819, Ezra Abbot aged 63 years and resident of Concord made application for a pension based on his service in the Revolution. He made a second statement of 18 July 1820 and a third statement on 9 April 1823.

On 1 March 1776, he enlisted as a private in the company of Capt. James Osgood in Col. Timothy Bedel’s regiment for a term of ten months. During this enlistment, he was taken prisoner at the Cedars in Canada[12] and was released at the end of his ten-month term. He was discharged on 1 January 1777. He next enlisted in July 1777 under Col. Thomas Stickney in a New Hampshire militia company. [13] He was discharged after two months. Ezra Abbott's name is listed on the official rosters of those at the Battle of Bennington 17 Aug 1777. [14] Ezra was awarded a pension based on his service.[15]

Relevant Probate

Jane and Ezra’s daughter Jane Woodman Abbott married but did not have children. In her will dated 19 October 1887, she made bequests to the following persons: stepdaughter Eliza Sanborn; sister Sarah Tewksbury; nephews Amos H. Tewksbury and Charles E. Tewksbury; niece Betsey Jane Sawyer wife of Alva Sawyer; niece Martha G. Owens wife of Alanson Owens; niece Louisa Jane Runnels; niece Almira R. Lang wife of M. E. Lang; niece Anner A. Chase wife of Frank B. Chase; nephew Elbridge Dimond; niece Sarah A. Shattuck wife of Lemuel Shattuck; niece Harriet Taft wife of Isaac Taft; niece Rose Anner Hoit; nephew George A. Hoit; nephew Sylvester G. Hoit; niece Ruth A. S. Tenney wife of D. C. Tenney; nephew George Abbot of Concord; niece Betsey Jane Abbot; niece Marian Swain wife of Stephen Swain; nephew George B. Abbot of Stewartstown; and nephew Cyrus Runnels. Gilbert H. Dimond was named executor.[16]

i. LUCY ABBOTT, b. 5 Apr 1784; d. at Warner, Nov 1869; m. 17 Feb 1835, OBADIAH/DIAH HUTCHINSON, b. 2 Nov 1776 son of Jonathan and Mehitable (Lovejoy) Hutchinson; Diah d. at Warner, NH, 22 Aug 1843. Lucy did not have any children.

ii. HARRIET B. ABBOTT, b. 12 Apr 1786; d. at Hartford, VT, 1 Apr 1862; m. 20 Jun 1816, JOHN CHAMPION, b. at South Lyme, CT, 12 Dec 1792 son of Ezra and Lucretia (Tubbs) Champion;[17] John d. at Hartford, VT, 27 Oct 1879. They had four children.

iii. ROBERT BURNHAM ABBOTT, b. 27 Apr 1791; d. at Concord, 22 Aug 1830; m. 1st, at Hopkinton, 25 Dec 1817, RACHEL BURNHAM, b. 2 Sep 1796; Rachel d. 19 Jun 1823. Robert m. 2nd, 11 May 1823, ELIZABETH FOX, b. 2 Jun 1794; Elizabeth d. 7 Apr 1840. Robert did not have children. His will leaves his estate to his wife Elizabeth and to his sister Champion, sister Lucy, and sister Rose Dimond.[18]

iv. ROSE B. ABBOTT, b. 26 Oct 1796; d. after 1860 (still living at the 1860 U.S. Census, but deceased before 1870); m. 11 Dec 1816, JACOB DIMOND, b. at Concord about 1790 son of Reuben and Mary (Currier) Dimond; Jacob d. at Concord, 28 Apr 1879.[19]

v. BENJAMIN JACKMAN ABBOTT, b. 4 Feb 1808; d. 4 Mar 1869; m. about 1833, DOROTHY TEWKSBURY, b. about 1813 possibly the sister of Daniel who married Sarah, but no records have been located. They had 9 children.

vi. SARAH ABBOTT, b. 22 Jan 1815; d. at Stewartstown, 26 Feb 1889; m. DANIEL TEWKSBURY, b. at Warner, 1 Oct 1810 son of Stephen and Sally (Flanders) Tewksbury; Daniel d. 6 Mar 1874.
