Biography

Joseph was born 29 May 1739 in Salem County, New Jersey.[1] He passed away 24 April 1811 (alternate death date 1804) in Franklin Township, Brown County, Ohio and is buried in Abbott Cemetery, Brown County, Ohio.[2]

Joseph married Esther Osborn about 1765 in New Jersey. He and his wife had eight children:[3]

  3. John Abbott, 22 November 1770
  4. Rebecca Abbott, 22 November 1774
  5. Eunice Abbott, 11 September 1777
  6. Silas Abbott, 28 June 1779
  7. Jane Abbot, 28 November 1781
  8. Joseph Abbott, 2 June 1784

Joseph was a millwright; moved from New Jersey to Virginia and served in the Continental Army during the Revolution. Following the war he traveled to Brown County, Ohio and settled 500 acres of Virginia Military land in the south-central part of Franklin Township, Brown County. Joseph went back to Virginia for some years, moved to Kentucky, and about 1804 came back to Brown County and joined his son John. He is buried in what is known as the Abbott Graveyard in Brown County.[4][5]
