JACOB ABBOTT, b. at Andover, 9 Feb 1745/6 son of Joseph Abbot and Deborah Blanchard ;[1] Jacob d. at Brunswick, 5 Mar 1820;[2] m. at Andover, 1 Dec 1767,[3] LYDIA STEVENS, b. at Andover, 3 May 1745 daughter of John and Lydia (Gray) Stevens;[4] Lydia d. at Brunswick, ME, Jun 1821.[5]

Jacob was a Justice of the Peace and Town Clerk in Wilton during the Revolution, and this civil service is credited in the Revolutionary effort.[6]

Jacob began his adult life as a farmer, but sold his farm in Wilton, New Hampshire to his brother in 1776. He lived in the town of Wilton involved in trade goods. He also built the first mill on the Souhegan River. He returned to Andover for a time and served on the board of Phillips Academy. He returned to New Hampshire and was later in Maine where he served on the board of Bowdoin College.[7]

Jacob and Lydia’s grandson, Jacob Abbott (1803-1879), was a writer of children’s books, the most well-known being the Rollo books.

Children

Jacob and Lydia had ten children, five of whom died in childhood. A sixth child, John, graduated Harvard in 1801 but died in 1809.

ix LUCY ABBOTT, b. 19 Apr 1781; d. at Grafton, NH, 1 Apr 1866; m. DANIEL CAMPBELL, born about 1777 whose origins are not yet known; Daniel d. Oct 1849. Lucy and Daniel did not have children. In his will, Daniel left his estate to his wife Lucy as long as she was his widow and also had bequests to his brothers.

x DORCAS HIBBERT ABBOTT, b. 21 Feb 1784; d. 14 Aug 1784.
