Biography

Private Daniel Abbott served with Massachusetts Militia during the American Revolution.

Daniel Abbott is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A000063.

Daniel was born July 25th, 1764 in Amherst, Hampshire, Massachusetts to Isaac "Jacob" Abbott and Mercy (or Marcy) (Scott) Marshall Abbott^[1]. According to his birth record he the following siblings, whose births are also recorded: sister Persis, born 10/8/1776, brother Amos, 04/28/1769, and brother Eliab, born 09/24/1771. All were additionally named in their father Jacob's will and received a portion of his estate, including Daniel^[2]. Daniel enlisted at about age 16 during the American Revolutionary War, beginning his service April 17th, 1781 and serving for 3 years ^[3]. He was described at the time as being about "5'3" tall, light hair and light complexion". ^[4]. Daniel's first marriage was to Naomi Graves in 1790, and they appear to have resided at that time in Leverett^[5]. Their children were Philena, Acsah, Lucy and Moses. Daniel Daniel is listed in the 1800 census of Hadley, Massachusetts as having a household of about 5 males and 5 females ^[6]. Naomi died in 1804. Daniel then married Hannah (Wiggins) Porter, widow of Pierpont Porter in 1807^[7], and they had John, Asahel and Julia. Daniel died at the age of 45 on November 10th or 11th, 1809, and was buried in Long Plain Cemetery in Massachusetts^[8].

Research Notes

Additional records of Daniel's military service would be helpful, further research to get the name of specific unit(s) he served with, but is known to have lived in Amherst/Hampshire County as per records. MA State as per the SAT https://sarpatriots.sar.org/patriot/display/100078 The 1800 census does not appear to list Daniel as having any enslaved people in his household, however the scanned record copy viewed is unclear, alignment slightly off and it's possible some information could have been cut off/miss-aligned in the scanning process. Daniel may have been a Quaker, additional confirmation of his religion (if any) would be helpful.
