JONATHAN ABBOT, b. at Andover, 24 Oct 1739[1] son of David Abbot and Hannah Danforth; d. at Andover, 10 Apr 1817;[2] m. at Andover, 13 Nov 1759,[3] his second cousin once removed, MARY CHANDLER, b. 15 Jun 1740[4] daughter of Nathan and Priscilla (Holt) Chandler;[5] Mary d. 1 Apr 1824.[6]

Captain Jonathan Abbot, then a 2nd Lieutenant. was part of Col. Samuel Johnson's Regiment of Militia. This regiment was part of the first alarm that marched in response to the Lexington alarm. This regiment participated at Bunker Hill. Jonathan Abbot received his commission as Captain on 7 October 1779.[7][8]

Jonathan Abbot did not leave a will. Nathan Abbott was administrator of the estate. The widow’s third is set out to widow Mary. The personal estate was sold at public auction to pay debts. Mary petitioned to the Court asking for allowances from the estate as Jonathan left ten children, two of whom are dependent on her for support. The value of the personal estate was $3,160 and the real estate value was $4,442. There was a deduction for the widow’s dower of $1,480, and the debts were $7,500. The heirs-at-law signing that they agree to the administration of the estate by Nathan Abbott are as follows: Mary Abbott, Jonathan Abbott, Jr., David Abbott, Solomon Abbott, Joseph Shattuck, Benjamin Abbott, Hannah Abbott, Sarah Abbott, and Joshua Chandler signing on behalf of Abiel Chandler and Gilbert Barker.[9]

Jonathan Abbott and Mary Chandler had twelve children whose births are recorded at Andover. Two of the children died as infants. Two children did not marry. Of the eight children who married, six married George Abbott descendants; three of the marriages were to first cousins.

The oldest son, Jonathan Abbott, did not marry but he did leave a will that created dissension in the family. One of the heirs-at-law of the will, Benjamin Abbott, questioned its validity claiming that Jonathan was not of sound mind and memory at the time the will was made. There was a suit involving Benjamin and Jonathan Abbott, Jr. (Jonathan’s nephew), and some other parties. The witnesses to the will attested that Jonathan was of sound mind. The will that Jonathan did make has bequests to the following persons: sister Mary Chandler wife of Abiel Chandler receives $100; brother Nathan, $15; brother Benjamin, $50; sister Phebe Shattuck the wife of Joseph Shattuck, $100; brother Solomon, $30; sister Hannah Barker wife of Richard Barker, $100; sister Sarah Abbott, $30; sister Priscilla Barker wife of Gilbert Barker, $30; Rebecca Shattuck, $50; nephew David Abbott receives his pasture land that adjoins his land; nephew Ezra Abbott, $200; nephew Herman Abbott, $50; niece Phebe Abbott, $20; niece Hannah Shattuck, $5; niece Phebe Abbott, $5; niece Priscilla Abbott, $20; niece Mary Abbott, $10; niece Lucinna/Susanna?
