Biography

JESSE ABBOT (twin), born at Brookfield, Massachusetts, 30 Mar 1742 son of Peter Abbott and Lydia Gilbert;[1] Jesse died at Brookfield, 20 Feb 1827;[2][3] married at Brookfield, 4 Dec 1765,[4] Sarah Wakefield, born1747; Sarah died at Brookfield, 16 Oct 1826.[5]

Jesse Abbot was a twin (twin of Nathan) and the sixth of twelve children of Peter Abbot and Lydia Gilbert. He married Sarah Wakefield whose parentage was not determined. Jesse and Sarah resided in Brookfield where Jesse was a blacksmith.

Jesse Abbot is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A000098.

Jesse served from the third precinct of Brookfield credited with 8 ½ months service in 1778. He also served as Sergeant under command of Lieut. Joseph Olmstead detached to guard stores at Brookfield in 1779.[6][7] He was perhaps later a Lieutenant in the local militia.

Probate

In his will written 20 May 1811 (proved 1 May 1827), Jesse Abbot bequeathed to beloved wife Sally use of all the lands and an undivided half of the buildings except the blacksmith shop. She also has use of the household furniture except the casks in the cellar during her natural life. Daughter Patty Weeks receives ten dollars. Beloved son James receives all the right that Jesse has to monies paid to James and all the accounts against him on the books are to be discharged. Daughter Sally Rice receives one cow and five dollars in furniture. Daughter Lydia Arnold receives two dollars and discharge of a twenty-five dollar note that Jesse holds against her husband Joseph Arnold. Daughter Betsy Olds receives ten dollars and one-fourth part of the household furniture. Daughter Cynthia Chadwick receives seven dollars. Daughter Charlotte Abbot receives fifty dollars. Son Lewis receives the remainder of the estate and is named executor.[8]

Jesse Abbot and Sarah Wakefield were parents of eleven children born at Brookfield.

i MARTHA “PATTY” ABBOT Patty Abbott, b. 23 Jun 1766;[9] m. at Brookfield, 26 Feb 1795, ARTEMAS WEEKS, b. at Hardwick, 9 Nov 1769 son of Ammiel and Susannah (Chamberlain) Weeks. Artemas was living in Pelham, NH in 1820.[10]

ii JAMES ABBOT James Abbott, b. 9 Nov 1767;[11] m. at Sturbridge, 17 May 1792, HULDAH SANFORD,[12] b. at Warren, 4 Feb 1770 daughter of John and Zerviah (Wheeler) Sanford. James and Huldah were in Sturbridge immediately after their marriage where James was a blacksmith. On 8 September 1795, James and Huldah sold property in Sturbridge[13] and perhaps left the area about that time, although it was not determined with certainty where they went.

iii SARAH “SALLY” ABBOT Sally Abbott, b. 27 May 1770;[14] d. at Thompson, CT, 14 Mar 1850; m. at Brookfield, 5 Feb 1792, AZARIAH RICE, b. at Brookfield, 26 Dec 1767 son of Jonas and Deborah (Force) Rice; Azariah d. (recorded at Brookfield), 30 Nov 1844.

iv LYDIA ABBOT Lydia Abbott, b. 9 Jun 1772;[15] d. at Spafford, NY, 1 Oct 1846; m. at Warren, 11 Oct 1792, JOSEPH ARNOLD, b. 2 Apr 1770 son of Ezekiel and Abigail (Baxter) Arnold; Joseph’s death not found but before 1846 as Lydia’s gravestone states she is widow of Joseph.

vi BETSEY ABBOT Betsey Abbott, b. 24 May 1778;[17] d. at Brookfield, 10 Jan 1863; m. at Brookfield, 21 May 1801, JOSHUA OLDS, b. at Brookfield, 27 Jul 1778 son of Simeon and Elizabeth (Banister) Olds; Joshua d. at Brookfield, 12 Nov 1863.
