Stephen's birth was registered in the Jul-Aug-Sep quarter of 1954 in the Greenwich district.[1]
Steve became well-known for his innovative radio shows, including Steve Wright in the Afternoon, which featured a cast of telephone characters. He then introduced the 'zoo' format, which includes spoof guests, comedy sketches, and a 'posse' of producers and staff. Among the regular cast of characters were 'Mr Angry from Purley', 'Sid the Manager', and 'The Old Woman' (played by Joyce Frost). He also initiated the catchphrase "Serious Jockin - with no g'", and this phrase was applied to any verb, such as "Serious rantin' - with no g" or "Serious knittin' - with no g". He appeared on radio for over 40 years.
Steve Wright was appointed MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) in the New Year's Honours list of 2024 for services to radio. [2]
