William was born on the 31st May 1876 in Ballyglass, County Mayo, Ireland , the son of William Robert Leach Williams (1849 - ~1929) and Elizabeth Jane (Gilbert) Williams (1850 - 1923).[1]
William attended Gerrans School, Tregassick Road, Portscatho, Cornwall from April 1880 until the 6th August 1886.[2]
1881 Census on the 3rd April 1881 William was living in Portscatho, Cornwall with his parents Elizabeth and William and his siblings Mary shown as Elizabeth, Blanche and John. Also living there was a Mary Gilbert a dressmaker, almost certainly a relative of his mother or his father's mother Margaret.[3]
1891 Census on the 5th April 1891 William a miller's servant, was living in Veryan, Cornwall.[4]
1901 Census on the 31st March 1901 William a leading seaman was aboard H.M.S. 'Cambridge', a gunnery ship berthed in Devonport, Devon.[5]
