Biography

Johannes was born in 1796.[1] He passed away in or before 1860, when the Census shows his wife living with their son John M.

He married Eva Barbara Scheidt in Schoenenbourg, Alsace in 1820.[2]

Johannes with his wife and six children arrived in New York from Le Havre on 10 June 1844.[3] Seven of their original thirteen children were then surviving. Their oldest, a daughter Barbara, had arrived a year earlier.[4] They made their way to Illinois, south of Chicago, arriving there in early July, via the Erie Canal and railroad.[5][6]

Along with Johannes's family aboard the Iowa were several other Schoenenbourg families, including Johannes's brother Peter, plus two families of Scheidts, one of Blattners, one of Einhorns. They became founding settlers of a number of Cook and Will County communities including today's Chicago Heights and Joliet.
