Biography

Charles was born about 1822.
Flag of Herefordshire (adopted 2019)
Charles Tyler was born in Herefordshire, England.

He was baptized on 02 August 1822 with parents William and Ann (Morvan) Tyler.

Notes to other researchers: The Tyler family last name has various spellings in records, including Tayler and Tiler (personal observation by Anonymous Hamilton, 2020-2021). In addition, there has been some confusion caused by the similar first names of his two wives (Mary Ann Collier and Maria Newey) and two daughters (Eliza born to Mary Ann and Elizabeth Maria born to Maria).

Charles was the father of Elizabeth Maria Tyler.

Charles Tyler was baptized a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on 11 August 1867 in England by T. Taylor. He was mentioned in various issues of The Saints' Herald, available at https://www.latterdaytruth.org/periodical.php?type=Periodical&value=S .

He passed away on 7 January 1900 according to photograph of gravestone in existence in 1940 at Uplands Cemetery, Sandwell (Smethwick), England, according to death record obtained from GRO, and according to the cemetery’s records. However, the current (2022) gravestone has the death date listed incorrectly (as 21 January 1900). (N.B. Another Charles Tyler passed away on that date, but in another town in the area rather than in Kings Norton, where this Charles Tyler lived and died.)

The change of date appears to be an error associated with the change of gravestone. The present stone adds Rose Foster, a daughter who died after WWII. It has been suggested that the original stone was destroyed by a bombing during the war. This hypothesis is supported by the lack of nearby gravestones in 2022, while gravestones were nearby in the 1940 photo. However, an email from the Sandwell Council office, received by Anonymous Hamilton on 14 Sep 2022, states, "The cemetery was not directly affected by bombing in WWII, however over the years some headstones that had become dilapidated/unstable with age, have been lowered and removed or buried within the grave space. This may be the reason your photograph depicts a greater distance between other headstones. As you suggested, following Rose’s burial in 1956 a new replacement headstone will have been erected, and we believe that is why it appears different on your photograph."
