chap 51 John Taylor(1739-1829) & Phoebe Clark(1742-1778)
John Taylor*, known as Colonel John was a private in the Revolutionary War and later a Colonel in a regiment of the State Militia and so called in recorded deeds. He was a leading citizen, ship owner and well-to-do man. He lived in Kennebunk in the part now known as Lower Alewive on the place now owned by Norman Bowen or across the road on the old Marshall Kimball place. He and his wife Phoebe are buried in the cemetery on the east side of the road at that place.
In the year 1784 John Taylor is reported to have grown 150 bushels of corn and 100 bushels of potatoes, also he had 6 cows, which at that time was considered a large farming operation. He married Phoebe Clark (born August 19, 1742 on October 23, 1760. He died July 4, 1823 and his wife November 30, 1830. The story is told that during the War of 1812, the report came that the English were going to land at Kennebunkport and the old Colonel loaded his musket into hi two-wheeled shay and drove to the Port to do his duty. The British did not come so no blood was spilled.
. Col. John Taylor was chosen with two other leading citizens of Kennebunk to form a committee of three to investigate the possibility of separating Kennebunk and Wells. (Kennebunk was a part of Wells at that time (1779-1800). There was too much opposition at that time to accomplish it and Kennebunk did not become a separate town until 1820. . Col. John Taylor's will made December 13, 1819 and proved August 12, 1823 names wife Phoebe and sons John, Jedidiah, Ebenezer, Joseph and late son William. Near the graves of Col. John and Phoebe Taylor is the grave of Julia Augusta wife of Rev. H. C. Trafton, died October 14, 1865, age 33 years. Also there are a number of unmarked graves. (Plain field stone markers).
