Biography

Ernest was born in 1901. He is the son of Sherman Stant and Viola Kelly. He's buried in Linwood Cemetery in Dubuque, Dubuque County, Iowa.

In 1910, Ernest (age 7) lived on West 3rd St. in Dubuque with his parents: Sherman (age 43) and Viola (age 36), and his siblings: Merle (age 20), Cecil (age 16), Mary Ann (age 13), Violet (age 9), Tara (age 5), and Lillian (age 3). Sherman worked as a laborer for a coal company.

In 1920, Ernest (age 19) lived in Dubuque's Ward 1 with his parents, Sherman (age 55) and Viola (age 46), and his siblings: Cecil (age 25), Violet (age 20), Tara (age 16), Lillian (age 12), and Francis (age 5). Cecil worked as a carpenter. Sherman and Ernest both worked for the coal company.

According to the 1925 Dubuque City Directory, Sherman and Viola lived at 85 S. Locust St. with Lillian, Ernest and Cecil. Sherman worked as a railroad sexton for the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad.

The 1925 Iowa State Census lists Ernest (age 18) living in a rooming house in Dubuque with his parents, Sherman (age 59) and Viola Ellen (age 53), and his siblings: Cecil (age 30), Lillian (age 16) and Francis (age 11). The house was owned by George Cable (age 37) and his wife Elizabeth (age 29), and their children: George, Jr. (age 3) and baby Modesta. Also living in the household were the Cables' nephew and niece: Eugene Hird (age 2) and his baby sister Genevieve. Other boarders were Anna Pladna (age 21); C. Huge (age 41) and his wife E.M. Huge (age 26) and their son M.C. Huge (age 6); and S. Seeley (age 52), and his wife S.D. Seeley (age 60).

On November 24, 1925, Ernest married Margaret Melloy in Dubuque. They had the following children:

In 1930, Ernest (age 25) and Margaret (age 23) lived in Dubuque with their children: Mary (age 3) and John (age 2). Margaret's parents, Frank D. (age 71) and Margaret Feeney Melloy (age 64) lived next door. Frank and Margaret had Irish parents. Ernest was a laborer with a hide and wool company.

In 1940, Ernest (age 35) and Margaret [Marguerite] (age 33) lived in Dubuque with their children: Mary (age 13), John (age 12) and Rita (age 7). Marguerite was a seamstress. It appears that Ernest was unemployed.

Also in the 1940 U.S. Census, Ernest appears as a lodger in the household of Elsie Louise Miller Smothers and her daughters. Ernest and Elsie later married.
