Biography

William Smith was born on 23 July 1820 at Wadhurst, County Sussex, England. He was the son of George Smith and Philadelphia Roberts. William was baptised at Sandhurst, Kent, England in the Wesleyan faith on 29 October 1820 with parents recorded as George Smith and Philadelphia Smith, farmers from Wadhurst[1].

In the 1841 English Census, William Smith is living in his parents household at the farm at Newhouse Wadhurst. Seven other siblings are in the household[2].

On 1 May 1843, William Smith, his father George Smith, married Caroline Sophia Tuppeny, 18 years of age her father George Tuppeny, at Speldhurst, Kent, England[3].

In the 1851 English Census, William and Caroline Smith are living at Lower Turnpike Gate, Wadhurst, Sussex, where William is employed as a Agricultural Labourer. They have three children, George, Elizabeth and Charity - all born Wadhurst, and Caroline's father, George Tuppenny Gardener Journeyman, and her brother, William Tuppeny Carpenter Journeyman, as well as two lodgers, Henry Weller and John Skinner, live in the household[4].

William and Caroline and their family emigrated to Canada between 1854 and 1859 (based on birth of children).

In the 1861 Canada Census in the Town of Picton, in the County of Prince Edward, William and Caroline Smith are shown living with children Mary Ann, George, Elizabeth, Charity, William, Fanny and Alfred. Alfred aged two is the only child born in Canada.[5]

On 24 December 1870, at Picton, Prince Edward, Charity Smith daughter of William and Caroline Smith married Edwin Brooks[6].

In the 1871 Canadian Census, William and Caroline are living in the Province of Ontario, Prince Edward district, Town of Picton. William is a labourer, daughter Mary aged 27 is a seamstress and son George a Sailor. Daughter Charity is married to Edwin Brooks a Stonemason, and other children William age 19 and Fanny age 17, both born in England, and Frederick aged 12, Flora aged 9 and Walter aged 5 born Ontario[7].

On 17 March 1873, William's daughter, Fanny Smith married Edwin Ackerman, at Picton, Prince Edward at "The residence of the Bride's father".[8]

William Smith, 57 year old male, born Wadhurst, Sussex, England died of cancer on 11 June 1876[9].
